This was my method of doing it, in the end though i was getting so much stick i just couldn't be arsed anymore.
Use Paint.net, its got far more functionality than MS Paint.
Using it for making a watermark is easy, you just create a new layer for the watermark text then adjust the opacity of the text layer.

i went to tokyo for a bit, then osaka. gonna try to get through something like half a million photos by christmas. some simple ones to start off
