I think there's an unaired episode of Ren & Stimpy where they find themselves in the Playboy mansion (or a parodied version of it), it was deemed far too risque to be aired due to scenes featuring cartoon tits and other carry-on esque humour.

I'm sure I've heard that there's a couple more adult themed episodes too that never made it to TV, it certainly wouldn't surprise me as it wasn't exactly the most family friendly show at the best of times.

It’s crazy how many people believe that the movie existed.

Yep it is, its funny how so many different people can seemingly remember something that didn't exist, but I guess in a net world people feed each other and these things grow.

That's really quite creepy. I clicked on the link and saw the name Shazaam and instantly my brain told me it starred Sinbad. I hadn't even scrolled down to see his name mentioned in the text.

Don't go to the Reddit page about the Mandela effect.

They all literally think that when they misremember things like that that it's evidence that they've slipped here from a parallel universe where that thing was real/true.

Mentalists.

So this is probably because I've been putting a shitload of time into it recently, but I'm fascinated by the original story of Destiny, and the reason it was canned.

In the build up to its release, Bungie kept going on about how they wanted to rival franchises like Star Wars in terms of storytelling impact and how plot was a major tentpost goal for them. When the game was released, the story was utter garbage and it's taken nigh on 5 years to get it somewhere approaching something interesting. From various leaks and reports, this initial lack of story came about from a radical change in direction just one year before the game's release.

It's all summarised in a Kotaku article, with this key paragraph

Everyone I spoke to agreed on one point: Bungie’s senior leadership, including Jason Jones, didn’t like what they saw. Some in the studio took issue with the rhythm of progression, which would have shown players all four main planets—Earth, the Moon, Venus, and Mars—within the first few missions of the game. (Obviously the moon isn’t technically a “planet,” but in the parlance of Destiny, the two are interchangeable.) According to one source, Jones also told the team that he wanted a less linear story—one in which the player could decide where to go at any time. That became one of Destiny’s key pillars.

So in July of 2013, Bungie’s leadership decided to totally reboot Destiny’s story. They kept much of the lore and mythology—the Traveler, the idea of Guardians, enemy races like Cabal and Vex—but they overhauled Staten’s entire plot, according to the people who spoke to me for this piece.

https://kotaku.com/the-messy-true-story ... 1737556731

This led to the departure of the studio (and Halo)'s narrative lead Joseph Staten. The piece also summarises the original story:

The player's main task was rescuing a Guardian called Rasputin from a massive Hive ship (the Dreadnaught) with the help of your 'Obi-Wan', Osiris. Once this is done, Rasputin turns out to be an AI controlling the Guardian who discovered that The Traveler was in fact a Vex contruct and part of their plan to take over time itself.

Then there's this, from a test player

Image

This gives a slightly different version of the plot, but both revolve around the Traveler being evil.

What's most interesting to me is that even now, 5 years later, hints of this are still leaking into the main Destiny plot:

Rasputin, in a very different form, was fleshed out in Warmind
Osiris, once meant to be the player character's mentor, returned in DLC
The nature of the Traveler, and the possibility of its evil intent, is currently being explored
Prince Uldren, who used to be The Crow, was a major antagonist (his spies were known as The Crows)
Images as far back as a pre-release 2013 GDC talk and Destiny 1 patch loading screen showed a mysterious 5th enemy race represented by pyramids. This has just recently, like a month ago, been revealed (or most likely repurposed) as the Darkness' true form.

The Destiny 1 story was hands down one of the most bizarre I've ever played. It was like Bungie gave 7 different people a vague outline of the universe and told them to write a short story, none of which matched up. Also, the final boss was a big black blob. The story of that world now is actually kind of cool, although most of it still takes place in flavour text and lorebooks (thankfully available in-game now) but its gradually getting weirder and more interesting, thanks largely I think to Activision's departure (the og Darkness).

People should play Destiny. It's pretty cool and it's free.

It gets weirder than that, saw a YT video about some of the theories behind it and there's some guy who reckons there's a huge alien/eldritch conspiracy to change reality using something called the 'veil'

Utter lunacy.

Pretty sure it came back years later as an adult cartoon.

This! I clicked the link wondering what baffoonery I would read on the other side, and then saw Shaazam and remembered Sinbad played the Genie. I swear I've seen it. When Shaazam was being advertised on buses and that I didn't understand why they whitewashed it but also that the original wasn't that great so didn't care. Still though.

I could be misremembering it for Kazaam as I do remember seeing that back in the day too.

Maybe there was a random TV show episode which featured similar content at that time?

I think it all came from Sinbad posing as a Genie for a poster and doing a stand up show dressed like that.
