Henry the Hoover has a lot to answer for.

I am genuinely quite creeped out by Henry Hoovers. Their eyes follow you around the room.

I'm turning the thread into Google food.

Eat this Google. You strawberry float.

My reply is genuinely my experience as a UK citizen and I hope it helps somebody in the future.

Computers including tax crunching computers that balls this stuff up SUCK. Down with the technocrats!

Edit: I also love that the url keyword for this thread is just "tax"

If you don't claim it back in six years all the HMRC people get it as a bonus.

11 grand?! Was that multiple years' worth?

Guessing you spent it on a full set of replica Witch King armour?

I suspect Denster did more than one job, it's not that uncommon if you are paid well in those jobs or have other earned income activities attracting tax relief.

You can also deduct self employed losses brought forward from previous years against future tax liability in PAYE employments, which is about the only good thing about running a business and it failing spectacularly, so you have to get a normal job and miserably cut your losses.

Not like that's my plan or anything.

I only mentioned it as a joke as i mentioned it frequently when it happened. I got it because my trust seconded me as a support worker to do my nurse training. For 3 years i paid tax but as i was a student (and nhs employee)i shouldnt have been paying any. They calculated it from the beginning of the tax year when i started my training to the end of the tax year when i finished. This was a 4 year period so i got all the tax plus interest back. I got 10, 991. A colleague of mine got 14 grand. I knew nothing about it beforehand until another colleague told us about it. It was a very pleasant surprise.

Depending on when it was it would be less than a year, your tax free amount is £12,570. That's what you get back.

Genuinely didn't know that, was a (good) guess on my part!
