Does money management and cooking get much coverage in schools these days? Home economics for me consisted of how to make beans on toast, how to boil an egg, and cupcakes. And by cupcakes I mean following the instructions on those kits which had Tom and Jerry on.

Not sure, we did nothing at my school as it was a boys school, but that was a good while ago so I would expect there to (hope there has been) have been some change

Cooking is genuinely one of the joys of life for me. It's a creative, expressive outlet that results in tasty stuff to eat, what more do you need?! :toot:

It's really easy to do it as a multi-tasking type thing whilst watching something on TV/netflix as well

I'm dreadful at cooking. I can do it, but I have zero concept of proper seasoning or flavour profiles so I could never just make a full meal off the cuff.

Baking is more my area, I do much better with explicit instructions and specific measurements.

I like to dabble in cooking properly every now and then, but my wife is so bloody good at cooking that she ends up doing most meals in the week. I make sure to cook each meal on a weekend though to at least partially pull my weight in thsst regard.

In my entire school life I think we literally had a two hour session on money management and that was it. We were all given job roles and a salary at random and then had to decide what to buy from a list of items. So everyone laughed when the bin man couldn't feed his kids and whoever was a CEO gloated that they were able to buy a digital camera and a new car. We learned absolutely nothing. It was one of those sessions where the teacher put in minimal effort so they could get through some marking while we asked what the point of it was.

 Kids are such banana splits. We had a lesson once where we had to fill a hypothetical hot air balloon basket with 10 people including ourselves (we had a balloon each). Of course, cue the boys all filling theirs with Rachel from friends, skully from the X-Files, Rachel from s club 7, Pamela Anderson, and so on. The balloon then got a leak, and 1 by 1 you were supposed to decide who'd get thrown out, supposedly to teach us the worth of people, but it just became "who is the most likely to strawberry float you before you throw them out" :fp:

Edit: I just remembered, you were supposed to be picking people with worth to society, like it was a 'the people in this balloon are going to be the last on earth'. Nah, just load it up with women you want to strawberry float.

We just did simple budgeting in school.

Society would benefit from better education around this. The amount of people that I work with who are completely inept with money is insane. I would assume it's a pretty big problem.

Education should really include "citizenship" and cover things like managing finances, renting and buying a house, paying bills, how the electoral system works, laws and rights, access to healthcare, all those sorts of things. But it's not in the ruling class' interests for people to be educated on these things.

I have absolutely zero interest in cooking but I make an effort to contribute two meals a week.

I generally have so little spare time so food is basically just a way to keep me going.

This is relatable - it's the cyberpunk 2020s, I'm supposed to have a robot body now :x

Lots of things that we need to do are a chore (although I don't agree that cooking is personally) - cleaning, washing, doing your taxes etc. but at least with cooking there is a delicious end product to it all!

To use a phrase of your own - this but unironically

My ideal state of being would be as an unsleeping, asexual thinking robot powered by nuclear fusion - and on that level I can relate completely to the woman KK saw in sainsbury's buying pasta sauce.

I don't get people who aren't in to food. Food is one of the best, if no the best, things in life.

I am into food, especially eating it, but it's just another thing that's become marginalised by other responsibilities taking priority.

It's unfortunate this is the aspect of cyberpunk we got rather than the robot bodies.

I like nice food! I think that's pretty universal. But if it takes ~5 minutes to eat something, then I find it hard to justify spending any more than ~5 mins preparing it. I definitely wouldn't rank eating amongst the best things in life though, I'm far too intellectually conceited for that. I look down on people wasting their lives seeking out such carnal pleasures when they could be stimulating the mind by playing videogames instead.

You eat your dinner in 5 minutes?! At least let it touch the sides on the way down!
