It has the interesting property of (almost) understanding what words appearing as text in images should look like - so prompts like "A robot holding a sign saying 'Hello'" will work (but the sign will say like HELLLO or HELOO some of the time).

I read a recent NewScientist article about how Dall-E amends prompts to counteract bias, seemingly uncovered by feeding it prompts like "A person holding a sign saying", which would then generate images of say a black person holding a sign with the word "black" written on it, suggesting the prompt was amended to "A person holding a sign saying black".

 Yes. It's pretty funny that's how it was discovered.

On the subject of ethics in AI, a (comparatively) huge company like OpenAI addressing model bias through such a silly hack rather than putting the requisite research into learning how to train the models to understand its dataset in a more equitable way is a big issue I have with the company and its products. They're one of only a handful of AI groups with the resources to do it properly and they should be harangued for choosing not to IMO.

Yeah that was basically the conclusion of what I read. That and the lack of transparency around their approach!

It's a well intentioned hack and I appreciate it from a dev perspective, but it's a technical sticking plaster over a societal problem.

I wonder how much it would strawberry float up the ecosystem to just suddenly introduce a massive herbivore? Seems like a silly idea.

Yes, but just imagine what you'd get at the drive-thru

OpenAI is obviously not perfect and there's clearly issues with how they operate, but at the end of the day when it can auto generate you content as good as this, I'm not complaining!

I've quite enjoyed feeding things inputs into the Playground feature and seeing how it attempts to auto-complete them

I can't imagine they'd be allowed to reintroduce them to the wild. They'd be for zoos if they ever managed it.

Hmm, I can't see them just opening a zoo full of extinct animals. Not without a small team of experts having reviewed it first at least!

And each subsequent zoo will be less and less interesting.

It's impossible to actually bring back woolly mammoths - there was a recent study of another extinct animal (the Christmas Island rat) that concluded we cannot 100% reconstruct the genome of an extinct species.

What Colossal are really trying to create is an arctic-adapted gene edited elephant with many of the traits of a woolly mammoth, which is really the goal - to reintroduce functionally equivalent species into ecological niches.

I'm not convinced how relevant a mammoth-like animal would be in our warming world but there we go. It does make sense for other species that we have driven to extinction but played an important ecological role - it's not about strawberry floating up the ecosystem but de-fucking it.

I think the intention of recreating a woolly mammoth-like species is actually to reintroduce it to Siberia with the intention of restoring the ecosystem. I'm sure that's what I've read previosuly about this project anyway.

In an interminably boring return to work INSET day over Zoom and we've just been given this set of 'unprofessional behaviours' and asked how we'd deal with them.

"Two teachers are talking about a student in the corridor.

One mentions that she wishes student X would stay home the next day.

She says that the student is extremely disruptive and class behaviour is much better without him."

Do not care. Student is probably a dick.

You notice an angry staff member screaming at a student in her class.

The student is crying.

Do not care. Student is probably a dick.

On an adventure trip it is reported to you by a student, that another student was crying and the teacher allowed her to get in bed with her in order to comfort her.

Well that strawberry floating escalated.

Depending on the gender of the teacher and pupil, the Sun will say "Phwor!" or "GUNGE THIS SICK PEDO SIR"
