Done some gardening work yesterday; digging up some stumps and roots.

My arms can barely move today :dread: .

So you're going by "VMware" now nerd? Haha what's up douche bag, it's Xen from hypervisor high school. Me and KVM used to give you a hard time, sorry but you were just an easy target. I can see not much has changed. You know that image you liked? Yeah I installed her. Guess some things never change, loser. Nice catching up... pathetic...

A real man wouldn’t shave and so would remain unbothered by petty girly trivialities like razors. If we have to shave, we use axes.

True. If Jawa were a real man then he would have just used his shovel from digging up those tree stumps to scrape the hairs away from his face.

I have a beard so, on top of having used a pick-axe yesterday, perhaps some folk may regard me as being "a real man"? Then again, I was getting down to this earlier, and maybe that could impact the perception?

Beard = check

Pick-axe = check

Milli Vanilli = FAIL

You’re no man.

Got myself a printer today; I've never owned one before but needed to get one to print off CVs and letters for job-hunting.

I set it up to operate wirelessly and all seems to be working okay. Plot twist: I haven't got any paper yet and so ran the test page on a torn piece of ruled notepaper :fp:  .

Got the death certificates today, only thing left is to speak to the funeral director on Friday and somehow sort out all of my mums things. The hardest part is likely still to come and I'm feeling numb right now, but we're getting through it.

Wasn't sure whether to put this in the parenting thread or not... But here goes... I need some advice.

Can someone help me figure out how to tell my 5 year old son that someone in the family, who he loves and looks up to so much is dying of cancer and won't be around much longer.

I've been trying to think of the best way to do it and I'm coming up with a blank.
He knows that they're "Poorly", and he keeps giving them hugs when they're having a bad day and telling them that he hopes they get better soon, which of course, ruins everyone in the room and it must make him wonder why nearly everyone is in tears.

Part of me feels bad for not telling him the truth.
The other part of me feels like he doesn't need to know the truth (/afewgoodmen.gif, I know..).
But I worry that him finding out they've died out the blue will be such a shock on his little heart :(

He understands death, and that people die and never come back as he's had his Great Nanny die recently.
But this one is going to really hurt him and I wonder if telling him - preparing him - will help or just make it worse.

I'm lucky to have not experienced much death in the family so far in my life so I'm really inexperienced when it comes to this sort of thing - any advice at all is massively appreciated.

Cheers guys.

Ooo that’s a hard one, personally I would go for the honest sit him down and explain it all thing.

He has to learn about it and if they mean the world to him there is just going to be loads of “where is such and such” “when will they be back” etc. Which will hurt everyone.

I think that’s the approach I would take with my little one when my Nan goes, but yeah hard to say not being in that situation.

Invoke the child as much as you can. Tell them this person won’t be around much longer and it’s important to create memories for them both. Most kids like a little responsibility and feeling grown up, so after the initial sadness, hopefully he’ll see it as a time to do nice things and enjoy the time together.

It’s a really tough one. On the one hand you want to protect him but on the other he probably needs to know what is going on.

I think I would sit him down and tell him. It’ll be tough and horrible, but by keeping it from him you are only delaying the upset. And telling him now will give him the chance to say goodbye.

Horrible situation to be in, dude (I'm fearing that myself having also not experienced much close-to-home death in the family). I echo the comments of others in that you'd be better off telling him the truth, and try to emphasise the need to cherish the time that he has left to spend with this person.

Is there a Google Account setting to block news websites or something? Whenever I search for something, any result that's a link to a news website only displays the organisation's name and nothing else.

The top stories pictures and headlines gets blocked out completely!
