How did anyone possibly miss that this was was my point? It's a horrible, horribly unfunny comic where they desperately attempt to excuse the fact that they're no longer popular enough to be at SDCC by trying to claim they always hated SDCC and that they're ever so glad they don't have to go anymore.

It's utterly cringeworthy and, as I literally wrote, desperately sad.

What is it that happened with them that caused their popularity to plummet? I remember they had a bloody kickstarter which was an absolute nonsense.

I imagine it's because the format is "two snarky guys make the Dreamworks face while being smug about something" and that kind of thing was cool when we were all teenagers, but now we've grown out of it and I guess today's teenagers aren't into it -- or maybe aren't into webcomics in general?

What amazes me is that Ctrl Alt Del is somehow still going.

I remember I used to love it, to the point I even bought the DVD for the animated series they did, but it just took a nosedive a good few years ago.

I think it was always pretty bad to be honest. I think you probably just outgrew it.

I mean okay, it was definitely worse when he started trying to do all the "serious" Loss stuff, but it was never particularly funny before that.

That was about the turning point for me really. And then when he decided to just hit a big reset button and abandon all the character development of the last few years I just checked out.

Some recs: Questionable Content is a good webcomic, particularly recently. Whomp is fun if you can relate to the character of the depressed, anxious, overweight anime nerd. Let's Speak English was consistently funny and cute.

Brawl in the family was amazing.

Also before Loss CAD had a few good story arcs and some funny gags, because it was never meant to be serious it was always really dumb humour like the Player 1/2/3 and 4 characters.

Whomp is the only webcomic I read these days.

I imagine Gabe's ongoing twattery had something to do with it too. The Dickwolves saga hit them pretty badly, and Gabe has continued to make transphobic, and often homophobic, statements since.

Also, what Karl said.

I didn't realise until pretty recently that they sold the PAX conferences too. Odd decision that, as it was the only thing that was keeping them relevent.

EDIT: lolwat they had a Kickstarter? There was an interview with them back in 2010ish where Tycho claimed he was able to buy a Mercedes upfront with cash.

Urgh.

EDIT 2:And holy gooseberry fool what a Kickstarter it was... for the mere price of $25 000 Gabe offered to draw your favourite video game character! Jeez.

I was talking to someone at the weekend about this - both webcomics and flash-style animations seem to no longer be popular as they were in the early 2000s, I guess because they take a long time and effort whereas you can make the dreamworks face yourself in a youtube vlog while going out for a burger etc. and get more attention for way less effort.

I don't know if it's still any good but I used to love phdcomics back in the day. Admittedly it is only really going to appeal to people in academia, but it was a good laugh back when I was doing my PhD.

I used to check Penny Arcade semi-regularly around the mid 00s, but even then it was obvious how far up their own arses those guys were. It's never great to take pleasure in other people's downfall but even so it is quite comforting to hear that they've been hit by reality a bit more in recent times.
