Deposits are for each person, I'm pretty sure you won't be able to transfer them all over to pay for just two meals

The point of the deposit is to insure the restaurant against lost income from booking out seats, so your colleague's suggestion doesn't make much sense. Even with two people going they've lost the income from eight others.

Normally you can cancel with enough notice though I think? You really should just ring up the restaurant and explain.

So the 2 people who cancelled, are the restaurant still going to be charging full price for their meals?
I thought the point of a deposit was that if you cancel then you lose the deposit, but they won't try to charge the full price.

Let's say 10 booked a meal for £10 deposit each at a restaurant.

8 people cancel but 2 still go.

The 2 peoples bill comes to £90.

Would that mean there's nothing further to pay, but the extra £10 is "lost", since the restaurant already received £100
Or
There's £70 still to pay for their meal after their 2 deposits? (with the other 8 deposits being written off)

(I've made up the numbers to better illustrate. It's a real situation at work right now. I'm sure it'd be the later, but the event organised is convinced it's the former. We're not phoning the restaurant and asking because "it's obvious and there's no need!"...)

I think if you don't call the restaurant then they could go with the later as they may argue they couldn't release the table for other bookings.

I would definitely call the restaurant in that situation to sort it out. As others have said, if they know in advance, they can release the table and use it for other people. If they reserve the table for you and you don't use it, I think they'd be justified in keeping the deposit separate. Big difference between a party of 2 people and a party of 10 people.

The numbers aren't as far apart as I've put in my example.

It's not my problem (I declined the invite :P) - but the remaining group going seem to be under the impression they can do nothing (such as tell the restaurant less people are going) and just turn up and "use" all the money already paid to settle their bill. (or part of it).

The point that the restaurant had expected 10 people's worth of bills (using my example numbers) and now only gets 2 people's worth...i.e. 8 customers are "lost" for the night as the table is booked...and that's the entire point of deposits is just not sinking in (Or the suggest to just PHONE THE RESTAURANT AND ASK...but that's a no go because it's obvious how it will work. Such a strong sense of entitlement :)

Cheers all. Except TNAG. He's the worst.

It's a pretty dick move to not tell the restaurant regardless of the deposit.

Yeah I think they're just being obstinate against those of us saying they should tell the restaurant. I'm not even sure they believe they shouldn't, they just don't want to give ground right now

I agree. You should go rogue and inform the restaurant on your colleagues behalf.

Yeah if you know the number of people has changed, ring up and let the restaurant know. It's common courtesy

Apparently not that common :x

(Again I think they will. Just not right now due to insecurity and having tied it, in their heads, to their position being 'right')

Anyone else seen the Waitrose Christmas advert with the cranberry-filled turkey? Looks like they're performing surgery on a slab of meat. Mmmmmm lets slice into this block of turkey and watch all the red sauces and bits ooze out :dread:

I saw that advert the other day. You expect that sort of shitty advert from Iceland, but from Waitrose? Disgusting. I am sticking to Fortnum & Mason’s from now on.

Trust PETA to make a mountain out of a conical mound of loose soil raised by small burrowing mammals, including moles, but also similar animals such as mole-rats, kangaroo moles, and voles.

I think this stems from an article on how the growing mainstream popularity of veganism could bring about a natural evolution of language away from sayings that involve animals. This was naturally lept upon and subsequently reported as "vegans want to ban these sayings because they are offensive" by the usual anti-vegan sadacts.

So of course PETA releases this gooseberry fool to prove those sadacts right. :fp:

And the scwun one (rhymes with wun) only works if you're a twat who pronounces scwun incorrectly anyway.

What kind of posh split is feeding birds scwuns?
