Do any phones have coverings for the ports though? Don't think I've ever owned one where that was the case and can't say it's ever caused any problems either.

Sony Xperia phones used to have covers for the charging port (My old Z2 did), but the newest ones seem to have dropped this.

Moral of the story is make sure your devices are clean, and protect the important parts from dirt. And no doubt I'll have forgot that moral by the next day, anyway.

Is there any easy way to clean them?

I have no idea what the guy at Team Know How did to clean it, but I certainly didn't hear any sort of suction being activated. Just a simple wipe would do, I guess. I also have no idea what the guy at Team Know How must have been thinking when it turned out the phone just needed a clean. It can't be that uncommon a thing, right?
