That’s insane. I believe them, but it just doesn’t compute in my head.

Similarly Cleopatra was born closer to today than she was to the building of the Great Pyramid at Giza.

Pfft Outrunner didn’t mention an iPad so it’s a completely different fact. :shifty:

Nah. But give it a shake and it'll make as much of a mess.

Keep getting knocked back for jobs in my sector. It’s starting to get to me a little bit that I hold a PhD but work in a call centre.

Don't you teach as well, or was that only while studying?

I pick up tutorials and lectures during semester at my old uni - it works out to a whopping 0.05FTE over the course of a year.

The problem is that experience of module leadership and more responsibility is needed to get jobs, and they won’t give me that experience. But I can’t get it anywhere else because all the jobs need additional experience.

At the moment I’m pinning all my hopes on the book proposal that’s out at peer review. But it’s been almost three months of radio silence and meanwhile I’m just sitting here, being given dog’s abuse by all the angry customers under the sun. :dread:

Yeah, the whole chicken and egg thing with experience is a killer. You might have to consider a sidewase move to somewhere that could give you this experience in the future? (note, I'm gooseberry fool at looking for jobs, so have no idea what I'm talking about)

It’s difficult because I’m not really qualified to do anything else at the moment. I’ve applied for a masters in teaching at higher education, which is part time. But the thought of working where I am for a year while that’s going through(and potentially having to pay £2,000 on top of the £15,000 I’ve already pumped in to higher education off my own back) is pretty grim.

Can we ask for you by name at work?
We can all get (well cheap) insurance from you and get you some comission :)

I don’t sell it and we don’t do commission, but the thought is appreciated.

Is that the PGCert that allows you to be a FHEA or whatever they call themselves now? If it is, I did this as part of my PhD and can send across my assignments to you. It's a piece of piss, to be honest.

Yeah I think so, though I think it might only grant Associate Fellow status at the end of it. It should be mandatory for PhDs to do something like that during their course given the percentage of them who want to go into teaching and research at the end of their studies.

My uni have been supposedly putting me forward for their FHEA training since August 2018, but even though I chase them up every month about it nothing has happened yet.

That's a fair point.

Interestingly, Cleopatra was born closer to the release of the iPad than she was to the building of the Great Pyramid at Giza

See, completely different Cleopatra fact to the one above. Preezy doesn’t know what he’s on about.

My eldest has asked for a Chelsea top. How do I beat the football out of him?

A few seasons of supporting Chelsea should do it.

Football’s great. Like, it’s absolutely fine not to like it but I’ll never understand the pathological dislike of the sport that some people have.
