Oh, it's not just that sport. I hate pretty much all sports. Rugby and American Football are ok-ish.

Sport in general is one of the great accomplishments of civilisation and I'll hear no arguments against that.

Joking aside, science and art, and sport, aren’t really comparable fields. It’s alright for all three to be great accomplishments of mankind without diminishing anything else.

A sentiment so nice, you said it twice. Depends who’s doing the equalising really.

After being down on my academic prospects earlier I got the results of two blind peer reviews for my book proposal.

They were, weirdly, complete polar opposites. One of them said my writing sample was "lucid and engaging," noted they would be happy to accept the proposal with a few tweaks and the dropping of a section, and would even put their name to an endorsement of the final manuscript that could be used to publicise the book.

The second one called my writing uninspiring, and reckons I rely on cliches too much. Said there was no point to the book I was proposing, and because I have no peer-reviewed articles under my belt yet, I'm not qualified to take on a project of the magnitude I'm suggesting. The PhD I've earned is, apparently, chopped liver.

The editor says she's still very much interested in the proposal and that the in-depth nature of the negative comments indicates promising material. The the series editor of the book line they're looking to have me publish under also seems to still be on-board, so they want me to have a look at the comments, chat to them about what we can change, revise and resubmit.

So yeah I don't really know how to feel about this one.

I haven't worked on a book (crikey, the thesis is proving bad enough ) but I'd've thought if 50% of the academics that read your book think it's great and want to endorse it, that's a fantastic result. No book is going to appeal to everyone, but you can take the negative feedback in stride and consider whether you can take anything from it, while being buoyed by the fact that someone out there loves it already.

And I don't "get" sport at all, team sports in particular seem to put fans of different teams at each other's throats in a way I find a bit off-putting (people say it's banter but then why are there so many genuine fights and hurt feelings?!). Saying that, I understand it scratches some kind of itch for many people and as an anime-watching adult I probably can't judge anyone else's hobby. I remember trying when I was a kid to "be normal" and get into football to fit in but nah, couldn't do it, just bounced off it really.

Yeah I don't take criticism well and for about half an hour the negative review absolutely ruined me, but I think actually there's a lot of positive ideas in both reviews. I think the fact that it hasn't been rejected out of hand by the editor is pretty important; though it wouldn't pass an editorial board yet, with a bit of work it may yet come good.

I only ever managed to get a few academic articles published, and none of them in any particularly well renowned journals or anything, but I too used to find the peer review feedback soul destroying at times! I'd usually shake it off quickly and the reviewers usually had some genuinely useful points that helped improve the work either for resubmission or using elsewhere, but it was still a stressful experience!

Good luck with the book Cora, like Karl says a 50% hit rate is pretty good. Even some seers can only manage that level!
