Saying that, I understand it scratches some kind of itch for many people and as an anime-watching adult I probably can't judge anyone else's hobby. :slol: I remember trying when I was a kid to "be normal" and get into football to fit in but nah, couldn't do it, just bounced off it really.

If anime nerds were fit enough to fight, you know they would.

Good luck with the book Cora, like Karl says a 50% hit rate is pretty good. Even some seers can only manage that level! ;)

This is why you simply do the analysis and let someone else handle all the writing and revising. Second author master race. :datass:

They were, weirdly, complete polar opposites. One of them said my writing sample was "lucid and engaging," noted they would be happy to accept the proposal with a few tweaks and the dropping of a section, and would even put their name to an endorsement of the final manuscript that could be used to publicise the book.

The second one called my writing uninspiring, and reckons I rely on cliches too much. Said there was no point to the book I was proposing, and because I have no peer-reviewed articles under my belt yet, I'm not qualified to take on a project of the magnitude I'm suggesting. The PhD I've earned is, apparently, chopped liver.

The editor says she's still very much interested in the proposal and that the in-depth nature of the negative comments indicates promising material. The the series editor of the book line they're looking to have me publish under also seems to still be on-board, so they want me to have a look at the comments, chat to them about what we can change, revise and resubmit.

So yeah I don't really know how to feel about this one.

Try to look at the positives. One of the peer reviews was very positive and the editor is still interested. The other one seems to be focusing on you not having peer-reviewed articles - so strawberry floating what? Did JK Rowling have any peer-reviewed articles published before she made that book about the speccy wizard?

You are never going to get 100% across the board praise, that doesn't happen to anyone or anything. Name any of the most popular and/or critically acclaimed things in the world and I bet I could find a negative review. Name any of the most unpopular/critically reviled things in the world and I bet I could find a positive review.

I would listen to your editors, take the criticism as advice on how to improve your work and try not to take things to heart (easier said than done!).

strawberry floating reviewer two! This is an extremely well known phenomenon mate. Do not let it get you down. My last publication, reviewer one came back with positive feedback, minor amendments and publish recommendation. Reviewer two was less convinced with major amendments and publish recommendation, and reviewer three (!) didn't rate my work at all. Even after I'd sent off an amended version with rebuttal, reviewers one and two just responded with "ready for publication" and strawberry floating reviewer three (who should just be a yes-man) was still insisting the work wasn't good enough. You're not going to please all the people all the time. As KP says, if 50% of the professional world think your work is decent, then you're doing far better than most.

No, it is football fans who are bad.

If football didn't exist then those people would be fighting over a different sport.

If sport didn't exist then those people would be fighting over who is best, Karl or Green Gecko?

I do love how un-ironically fans of some of the worst clubs sing that song.

Heard it at a Forest Green Rovers match once

A lot of clubs sing "By far the greatest city" instead of "by far the greatest teaaaaam".

It's sung at Fratton Park. Other than the Gunwharf area and historic dockyard, Portsmouth is an absolute hole. Everyone knows it. Absolutely ridiculous song choice

Karl in the unlikely event you're in town, and I have a spare ticket for the match. We'll go together. I'll lend you a scarf, get you a pie and some pints. You'll enjoy the manly comraderery!

Also there's several soccer manga you could read... :shifty:

I like the old town (around the square and round tower) and Guildhall. Clarence arcades are good fun, and the whole seafront all the way up from there is nice really.

So it's not that bad :P

Fair points - but would you rank it amongst the greatest cities the world has ever seen? It's got to give ancient Cairo a run for its money, right? :P

"Did you see that game against City and United?"
"The problem with the reds is they think they can buy their way up the league."
"What game was the ref watching?"

The go to phrases when trying to ingratiate myself into lad culture.

Do you ever think RW looks at DM, who's got quite a good career going in panel shows and radio, with seething jealousy? I do.
