There are ways to counter deep fakes, and most of them (like checking the source) are already applicable today to existing forms of fakes news. There are also technological solutions to deep fakes, like cryptographically signing images and videos to verify their source.
Regular people can't be relied on to do the above due diligence, and never have done. Society functions because of the trust people place in news sources that do perform such checks. The larger problem we have in the modern world isn't the threat of deep fakes, it's the erosion of trust in established media and the states that regulate them.
Deep fakes don't eliminate the verifiability of news, but they make the trust and regulation of the media more important.
Your first line is the point though. People believe bullshit now based on nothing but a headline on a news article.
When there is an actual video of Clinton doing/saying something then people are going to believe it. It doesn’t matter if they are cryptographically signed or debunked, there will be an actual video that ordinary people will see as completely real.
Headbangers will believe everything they see. More sensible people might be sceptical but that also creates a problem when somebody like Trump says a genuine video is a deep fake.
If fake news is bad now, deep fake videos that are indistinguishable from a real video are going to destroy any public trust in video/photo/audio evidence.

My point is that we're not about to step off some precipice into a world of indistinguishable truth due to deep fakes, we're already well down that path. The underlying issue is not the technology of creating deep fakes, but people's engagement with news media, and the way that needs to be addressed does not change. Deep fakes may lead to problems, but they won't be the primary cause, and concentrating on them as the problem will not fix things.

I think you have a point but are missing just how persuasive people find videos.
We could suddenly go back to an era of trust in the newspapers/TV news but a deep fake video would still persuade millions of people.
People that aren’t fooled by fake news now will be fooled by video “evidence”.
And on the flip side people will also be convinced of guilty people’s innocence when they just claim the video is a deep fake.

And it won’t just be Trump. Literally any politician, celebrity or even just members of the public will claim all videos are fake.
Been cheating on your wife and she finds a video? Just get a mate to tell her he made a deep fake as a laugh.
Premier League footballer videoed doing coke in a nightclub? Tell the fans it is a deep fake.
Want to persuade voters that your opponent strawberry floats kids? Create a deep fake of them lusting after their own daughter..... oh no wait Trump already did that for real years ago.

Had to do a motorway awareness course because I got caught speeding on a smart motorway.
Better than 3 points but still, perhaps the most painful 3.5 hours of my life. It started with a brainstorming session on "what are your favourite things about motorways"
