Made the mistake of posting something to reddit this morning. Literally within the minute my incredibly innocuous post had 3 abusive replies calling me an idiot.

I got to the Reddit front page once with a montage of photos of Japanese manhole covers (hello no context thread!) I’d taken while travelling.

The manhole covers all have different designs depending on the location and I’d taken photos of my wife and I standing on them as some fun holiday photos. Hey, Reddit would like this I thought, so I posted it to the mildyinteresting subreddit before I boarded a flight. By the time I landed it had 50k odd upvotes and over a thousand comments, many of them angry about the fact I’d included my feet in the photos and what a scumbag I was for doing so

Reddit's weirder communities are almost always better than the mainstream ones. It's hard to recommend it as a platform, both because community moderation is so variable across different subs and because the site admins are complete tools, but there are a few good places there.
