Tiggy?

Here in Wiltshire it was Tig, the map does not show this, and so is inaccurate.

It was always Tag for me growing up in Gloucester but I was definitely aware of the Tig variant.

All the others sound like bullshit to me!

I can't figure out how it's anything other than Tag, why is it Tig?

Nope.

Bulldog was another favourite, though at my school we generally preferred the ultra violent 'trip up bulldog'

I'm about 90% sure it was just called "It" at my school.

Bulldog or British Bulldog round my way.

Also surely "trip up Bulldog" is just normal bulldog - the whole point was just to strawberry float up anyone trying to get from one side to the other, nobody cared how!

Never mind all that, what about kiss chase :datass:

The only thing I didn't like about that is only Mr Bullock used to turn up to play it, maybe because it was always held in one of his weekend detentions.

There's a new Tom Scott video that briefly touches on what people call that particular playground game, before going on to look at the Simpsons influencing how people remember Jingle Bells, Batman Smells.

Same.

There was a version we had called "off ground touch". Basically if you weren't on the ground then you were safe but only for 10 seconds, which led to lots of climbing into trees/scrabbling up walls. And then pain when you had to jump back down.

Tig = game where one person is "it". Itness is transferred through physical contact, usually the tap of a hand. Only one person is it, and play is chaotic - usually everyone else just runs from whoever is it.

Hide and Tig = a variation of "hide and seek" where contact must be made as in tig. It starts with one searcher who counts down while all other players hide, and then each person who is caught becomes another searcher until everyone has been caught.

Last One = The play area consists of two opposing safe areas, with a central area that must be run through en masse. The last player to reach the safe area goes into the middle, where they can catch those running through as in tig, who will then also join them in the middle, until everyone has been caught.

Bulldog = Like "last one", but instead of simple contact the runners must be caught by tackling them to the ground. This was only ever played on a field for obvious reasons!

It also misses "batch" for a bread roll which is localised almost entirely to Coventry

I'm trying to remember the names of some other childhood games now - hide and seek, tag and bulldog were definitely the big three. There was definitely a game that involved bases heavily but I can't remember the name now - it wasn't "last one" though.

Seem to recall playing a game called "micheal myers" as well but no idea what that involved or how regional it was!

That was a nice video, might have to check out some of his other stuff.

I think that shows what a sheltered life you had! And also why it was pretty much permanently banned, too.
