Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are the answer to that problem as they only require a small battery for the electronic systems with the majority of the electricity for the motors being generated when needed.
Its also relatively environmentally friendly to produce the hydrogen if renewable energy is used to 'split' the hydrogen from water (e.g. an offshore windfarm could produce it and pipe it to the mainland in a similar way to natural gas currently is).
There's also the added bonus of not having to wait several hours to charge the batteries, it takes just a few minutes to fill up the hydrogen tank.
sadly though there are currently only 8 places in the whole UK where you can fill up hydrogen fuelled vehicles so they're not exactly practical yet.
