Just had a go on this and it's still the game that seems to ostracise me while I wonder what on earth anyone else finds entertaining about playing it.

Started playing this tonight, I am rusty but managed 2nd on my second game. 8 games, 2 tops 3's so far. Gonna keep at it.
I also played Super Bomberman R at an event today and it got me thinking. When's Bomberman 99?

EDIT: There we go, took 10 tries but I won one.

Had a little session today and won my first game.

Feel like I got a little lucky maybe. Got fairly aggressively targeted midgame so set my targeting to attackers to fire back on all of them, and got a lot of badges from KOs that way which made surviving later on easier. My block luck for that game was pretty decent too.

Supports Frank Lampard's Derby and hates Tetris. Not sure which is worse.

Gave it a quick go expecting to be horribly outclassed.

Played three games of it. First two coming in around 59/60 in each due to stupid mistakes. Third game my Tetris-sense clicks and I make it all the way to 15.

Yeah I'm gonna be playing more of this.

I like it, my only problem is that it feels a bit too random and inconsequential until a 30 second window when what you do is suddenly very important and then, in my case at least, you’re defeated. I’ve not won yet but come in the top 5 a bunch of times and am usually top 10 or there abouts. When I fail though it’s not really clear why. I can be playing well and comfortable with only a few people left and the all of a sudden I’m strawberry floated, I don’t learn anything, I don’t really get better I just have to start again and hope for better timing.

There’s also zero sense of progression and once I do get a few wins even the sense of achievement will be pretty diminished. Gameboy Tetris you’re at war start to finish, it’s a thrill. Even though you know it’s a futile battle the high score is a constant milestone, you can always do better, survive a little longer. I don’t really get any of that with this. Feels more like a game of whack a mole, where you’re the mole.

There is a lot of luck in opponents and how the game pans out, but I think that probably does also reward consistency in playing good Tetris. You definitely can get unlucky with being suddenly targeted by a bunch of junk, but you can also play the odds by chasing KOs for badges without taking the lead and making yourself a target.

The progression comes in how good you are at Tetris and how you improve at the core game. The battle royale part is a layer above that really. Maybe you're just already good enough at Tetris :P

I wouldn’t say everything is inconsequential until that 30 second window. You need to be building up badges throughout the game, if you’re not, you won’t have a chance at winning when it gets to the final numbers.

Best analogy I saw for it was making it to the end of a Fortnite, PUBG or Apex Legends round with the most basic loot. It makes it much harder to survive.

This Reddit post breaks down a lot of the mechanics.

You don't really do anything to get badges though. As far as I can tell there's no real strategy to who you target and if you get to the top 20 you're probably going to have 2 badges just by virtue of being there.

Well obviously you should set to KOs, but you can also maximise the chance of getting a KO by firing off a load of junk all at once. A couple of Tetrises in a row will send 8 lines at your target which gives a much bigger chance of pushing someone over the top than firing off single lines. I've been getting 4+ KOs a game pretty frequently doing that.

I too finished 15th after three goes, after two horrible 'learning' rounds. It's intense as all hell. I love it.

Well, the better your clearing methods (Tetrises, combos, t-spins etc), the more blocks you send to other players and so the more chance you’ll have of getting badges. The strategy comes from how you play Tetris rather than targeting specific other players, although there’s definitely some scope for doing that too if you’re quick.
