PostThe 2022 GR video games draft round 1 begins. Draft order Pg 2
by Rex Kramer » Mon Jun 20, 2022 11:27 am

Thanks to all who signed up in the other thread (t:new-idea-for-a-forum-game-that-is-videogames-related-sign-up-now?f=2), we are still open for participants so please stick your name in that thread if you want to take part in a later round.

So here's the game. 4 contestants will take part in a draft to create the ultimate games lineup from a random year. They will have to draft one game in each of the following categories

Metacritic rating of >= 90 (can be filtered here https://www.metacritic.com/browse/games ... w=detailed)
Action/Adventure
RPG
Sports/Simulation
Puzzle/Strategy
Wildcard

Games can belong to multiple categories but once they're gone then they're gone. You can draft the categories in any order but you will need to state what category you are taking a particular game when you select it. Release date is based on the European one, this is less of an issue in more recent years but please bear this in mind. If a game didn't get a European region release then it's not available to draft.

Draft order will be in a snake draft format, so round one would be 1,2,3,4, round two 4,3,2,1 etc.

Then the final drafts will be voted on by everyone and the person with the most votes goes through to the final (or semi final if we get lots of people).

The following will be this week's contestants.

Tomous
Qikz
Drumstick
Ironhide

And their randomly assigned year is 2012. The draft will begin on Saturday evening and will continue until all selections have been made so you have until then to do your research. Draft order will be randomly determined just before it starts. There is no right or wrong way to draft, you can go for the big hitters, the stuff that you've enjoyed, whatever. Any questions then please feel free to post. I hope that sounds like fun for those who have signed up.

So the aim is to be the first to pick the 5 best games of the year? I don't get it.

Not really, the aim is to pick the best line up you can given how your draft order works out. Looking at 2012, highest rated game of that year on Metacritic is Persona 4 Golden. Now whoever drafts first could pick that as their metacritic category or in RPGs depending on how their strategy lines up. This means that contestants 2,3 and 4 can't now take P4G. Or they may decide they don't want it. As the draft proceeds, you can decide to try and fill the categories that are the best or there might be a game you really love in that year that you just have to have. Plus if you draft first, then you don't get another pick until everyone else has picked 2 games (you then get one straight after that) due to the snake format.

Is there like an example you can make to show us what we need to do here, because I don't really get it. I think I kinda do but I'm really not sure. Even reading what you've said there lol

First 2 rounds of the draft might go like this;

Round 1
Tomous - I pick Persona 4 for my RPG
Qikz - I pick Mass Effect 3 for my RPG
Drumstick - I pick Xenoblade for my RPG
Ironhide - I pick Far Cry 3 for my Action/Adventure

Round 2
Ironhide - I pick FIFA13 for my sports game
Drumstick - I pick NBA 2K13 for my sports game
Qikz - I pick MLB The Show 13 for my sports game
Tomous - I pick May Payne 3 for my Action/Adventure

After 5 rounds we each have 5 titles for our 'team'.

Everyone else votes on their favourite lineup of games that have been selected

Sure thing. I'll go with 3 people, not 4 but the concept remains the same. We've got Adam, Bill and Chad. The draw gives Adam 1st choice, Bill 2nd and poor old Chad picks third. Their year is 2022 and I'm going to extend the Metacritic down to 85 as we're only in June so not a full year of releases gives less choice.

1st Round
Adam has first pick so takes Elden Ring as his Metacritic option.
Bill goes second and takes Horizon Forbidden West in Action/Adventure
Chad goes third but as he leads the 2nd round picks he will get two picks. He decides to take Gran Turismo 7 in Sports/Simulation as that looks a shite category for this year.

2nd Round
Chad has first pick, he looks at Metacritic and it looks a bit rubbish this year. He also notes that Bill hasn't taken anything from that category either so he thinks he'd better snag something. He takes Rogue Legacy 2.
Bill next and he's a bit pissed. No one else has to draw a metacritic category but a lot of the games also fall into other categories so he'd better get one. He takes Citizen Sleeper because Bill is a cool guy.
Back to Adam, he gets the next pick and also the one after as he starts round 3. He thinks Tunic was pretty good so he takes that in Action/Adventure.

3rd
Adam to start etc,etc.

Rex, one thing to consider is by having an odd number of games to pick, there's a big advantage to going first because the final round you get first pick but then there's no equivalent next round where you get last pick

There's 6 rounds, you missed Metacritic rating of >= 90 (can be filtered here https://www.metacritic.com/browse/games ... w=detailed)

I feel like a lot of the games that appear to be the best at a glance were actually just ports/remasters haha

Okami HD was probably a decent remaster of a great game and XCOM Enemy Unknown got ported to the Xbox. I think Fire Emblem Awakening and Persona 4 Golden are the only two standouts for what was actually released that year haha

Apologies, I didn't realise that was a round and thought you were just including that as a reference!

Makes sense!

Just noticed this is Friday evening, I'm going to be at a cricket match from 6.30pm, and let's be fair, drunk, so might be better to swap someone else in for me this week as I'm going to be struggling to pay attention?

I can move to Saturday evening. I can see it taking some time to wind it's way through people's suggestions so it doesn't have to be completed in a single sitting.

Can't wait to get into some real deep arguments about genres and whether a game should count :datass:

Now there's two things I would never say.
