Seems like opt-in/out is the way forward.

Is your first name John? Because if it's not I have exactly zero detail to work with.

Just scrap the whole thing. It's spoilt now. There's no fun in it any more.

Yeah I think the fun has been killed by the controversy. To use the thread now means second guessing if somebody is going to get upset, which destroys the whole amusement of the innuendos.

I've also become very aware in the last twelve months that we leave a neon footprint on the internet when we post on this forum - someone linked to a forum topic on one of my streams that was full of outright unacceptable content that I had been involved in when I was 19. It's not reflective of who I am now(or even really who I was then, they were the posts of a kid who wanted to be included), and it caused me a pretty significant and prolonged anxiety attack when I read back through it.

There’s a reason ephemeral apps like Snapchat became popular and why a lot of messaging apps added the option for disappearing messages. Sometimes I wonder if it’s wise for us to keep an archive going back nearly 15 years for reasons you’ve mentioned, but I have mixed feelings on that.

This is why we can't have nice things.

I think we can rescue this. All we need to do is come together.

Unfortunately, i think a mass debate may make things worse.

I'm also concerned that the backlog here is so public. I don't think there's any reason for random (not Archived) threads which have been inactive for years to be indexed on search engines and so on. I'd certainly be in favour of something like e.g. older posts requiring a login to see. (This is just my personal feeling / preference on it though.)

There's a lot of history in the archive which would be a huge shame to lose if it was gone - same problem I had with gamesradar. There's so many good things that were posted back then that losing it would suck.

Requiring a login though is a great idea. Might drive more people to sign up too.

I have a brilliant one here and now I don't feel I can post it. Just imagine that I posted something really funny.

I have copied it to my clipboard in case the person in question should casually pop in and mention how much they support the good work this thread does.

Hide it behind a login by all means, but don't delete our entire history.

Yeah that might be the best idea. Societal norms change and well there’s a lot on here from the early days that wouldn’t fly now (9/11 Photoshop challenge anyone?). But there’s a lot of great stuff from the past too.
