PC version data mining hints at characters to come

£60 + premium prices (expected) for characters feels far too steep.

Didn't they say all DLC including new characters would be free? They'll make the money on the cosmetics etc.

I do feel people are being overly harsh on this games marketing etc... The Spiderman exclusivity sucks but it's not the first time a platform holders paid for exclusive content and sure it won't be the last.

And yeah the mobile stuff might be a bit OTT too but they've said all post launch dlc is free, no loot boxes and no pay to win stuff so it could be a hell of a lot worse. The beta was pretty generous in terms of content and whilst I can see why it wouldn't be the game some people wanted, I had a lot of fun playing the beta with a couple of friends and I'm looking forward to playing more at release.

The character who played the best for my style of play was the man Stevie Rogers, who was missing in the beta. Otherwise I also had quite a lot of fun with it. Levelling up each individual Avenger is going to take ages, but it’s a nice touch that you can bring them with you as companion AI - so if you level up 3/4 in a hefty way you’re going to have a right crew.

I quite liked Iron Man when he got going - he didn't feel like Iron Man, but felt good fun.

PC Gamer hands-on is less than complimentary:

it's clear that the 'game-as-a-service' progression keeps the Avengers from feeling like the Avengers, at least at the start. My powers don't feel super at all, and knowing I'll have to grind for a long time to unlock more skills, as well as find additional gear to make them feel somewhat threatening is a real turn off...I was constantly reminded that I needed to adjust my loadout. Each slot requires different resources in order to 'boost' that piece of gear, so there's a lot of materials to juggle. Some items will also have perks, but these seem mostly negligible, so far. Having a 6.3 percent chance of my perfect evade granting a Heroic Charge for my squad doesn't feel like something to rave about.

The most annoying thing about the gear was how often I felt I needed to keep swapping it. Carefully selecting the gear that you believe is worth levelling up in an RPG isn't exactly a new concept, but spending precious resources on a vest that I'd just found for Ms Marvel only to find a better one around the corner was aggravating. The notion of scouting around for gear for characters that are supposed to have superhuman abilities just doesn't sit well with me, either. There are just too many asterisks on making these heroes fun to play. The system just feels like a way to prolong the grind, and it makes completing missions feel like chores, on top of their already repetitive structure.

The Marvel's Avengers beta offers a lot of content for its three-weekend duration. Large War Zone missions, Drop Zones and HARM Rooms give players a good idea of what to expect, but I'm disappointed that I'm now far less interested in the game after trying them. I'm already fatigued from destroying servers, capturing points, and facing the same enemies repeatedly. Crystal Dynamics has made solid improvements on the game since they first unveiled it, but I'm not convinced that its service game model is compatible with making its superheroes genuinely fun to play.

A couple of loot em up rookie errors from PC Gamer there, in my view - of course you’re going to continually get better gear as you wade through the levelling up, it’s only as you approach the cap where you can start looking at various load outs and such. But y’know, their opinion and all that. It was a bit repetitive after a few hours yeah, but to me that’s because of the amount of content the beta actually has.
I had fun, anyway :shifty:

Did anyone other than Buff actually like what they played in the beta?

There is still a balance to get right here though - while you will constantly be finding new and better loot, if you have an upgrade system then upgrading an at-the-time best piece of equipment should keep it viable for at least a little while going forwards to not make your upgrade system pointless until the end game. More important is there being some horizontal differentiation - different skills, or resistances, or damage types that mean you might genuinely choose to keep using a piece of equipment even after finding another that is objectively a higher level.

Purely based on the game's theme/flavour, the progression does sound ill-paired to the setting. For some heroes equipment makes sense if it's tailored to them, like progressive Iron Man suits, but for others like the Hulk having equipment sounds nonsensical.

The upgrading of the at-the-time gear...totally agree with you, and it was viable to do so, and the resources needed to do it were there should you wish to, and were relatively plentiful if you simply played the game.
I’ve seen your last point a few times - the ‘why do I need to keep equipping gear to make Hulk punch harder, it makes no sense’ but...I mean, that’s the nature of the sub genre isn’t it?

Fair play, I don't know how well this handles its loot progression!

With the Hulk and equipment, it's just awkward flavour. I get that it's the genre and it makes sense from a gameplay perspective, it's how it works in universe where it's distracting. Ultimate Alliance 3 went a little more abstract with you finding and equipping crystals, and I think a more abstract approach like that where you can handwave away the stat boosts as "magic" probably works a bit better when you have such a diverse cast of characters sharing the same loot. Contrast something like Destiny or Borderlands where the weapons/armour make sense regardless of your character so they can be more grounded in universe. Here the loot is grounded rather than abstract and unique for each character, which works better for some characters than others. The Hulk stuff is a bit weird because they've gone a bit biotech with it, equipping nanomachines to increase damage and from what I can tell swapping out his rib cage for better defence

Had my fill of this before the full game comes out so just had a quick go as Black Widow, the only one I’ve not tried. Holy hell she’s excellent, loads of fun. Her super is off the chain.

Played a few hours this weekend to see if my initial impressions were accurate. I'm not sure I'd go as far as saying it's bad, it just all seems a bit servicable and by the numbers.

The combat is okay but there it doesn't seem to have a huge amount of depth and there's little in the way of interesting encounters. The Hulk in particular felt horrendously dull to play as. I was also disappointed by the lack of any sort of team-up attacks between the Avengers.

The missions didn't grab me but the thing that completely killed my interest in ever playing it was the lack of interesting loot. This seems like a game that's going to have a lot of grinding to level up and putting a lot of effort in to get +19% stun chance at the end of combo with nothing visually changing just sounds dull.

Kamala is cool though.
