Black Widow looks like she's being played by Cobie Smulders.

Looks more like Janeway cosplaying Widow in the holodeck.

Oh my god

It's probably just a case that these CGI sequences are being done by a Square team in Japan right? :shifty: perhaps everything about the art style and looks is different on the actual game models.

They should have just gone for a comic book style, not this weird “like the movies but not the movies” generic look they’ve finished up on.

Such a bizarre direction to take, using the movie costumes and art design but subbing in bland, lookalike faces. If you're going to make the franchise your own (and you can't afford actor licences) then make it your own. This strange halfway house just gives the whole thing a 'badly-drawn-cartoon-on-the-side-of-a-funfair-ride' vibe.

Now that's a Holodeck episode I want to see.

I don't really have a problem with the character models aside from Cap, who looks like he's had one too many bbqs and is a 50 year old single dad!

Spiderman is a great example of how they can have the look and feel of the MCU but create their own decent looking character models.

I don't think this is entirely accurate. The Spiderman game is definitively distinct from the MCU in that it immediately sets up its own universe: the Peter Parker is a very different character from the MCU version (he's mid-20s rather than teens, he's dated then split from MJ, he's working for Otto Octavius) and it's a far more experienced version of Spiderman we're presented with. It's actually got more in common with the Maguire Spiderman than the MCU version (which is why I played the whole thing in the Maguire suit of course).

Here it looks like these are the MCU versions of the heroes, just with weird faces.

As with any license this big, its about brand continuity > quality of individual products. The costumes are as recognisable as the actors (which says something philosophical about the value/marketability of people vs imagery or things) and probably cheaper, so thats what the audience will recognise and what helps make the big bucks.

Eurogamer did a really good piece on why it doesn't work - basically it's too close that any changes jar..

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019 ... gers-didnt

Keanu is the right kind of familiar. And over at Square Enix, Final Fantasy 7 had the right kind of familiarity too, even if the characters never fought like this, never moved like this before. The combat system was new, but the boss was familiar, and the music was familiar and the roster was familiar. It was a warm bubble bath of nostalgia despite the new stuff. And it made the new stuff exciting.

But look: you recognise the characters and you recognise the bosses and the music. And then: Avengers. You recognise...the uniforms? The air of Mild Peril? But who's wearing Captain America's outfit? Whose voice is that coming from Iron Man? The panic starts to rise a little. Who are these people wearing my friends' clothes and borrowing their banter? The final guitar clash was pure horror: what have you done to Paul Rudd?

sh, faces are important. It's bad enough when games don't have the right voices - when it's Jim Hanks rather than Tom Hanks, when it's Frank Stallone. But The Avengers didn't have the right faces either. They didn't have the right faces but - crucially, fatally - they had everything else. So there was this familiarity in the costumes and the relationships and then: who are these strangers?

Maybe it will work. Spider-Man worked for Insomniac, but they ditched more, carried across far less and were comfortable in the sense that they were doing their own take. Marvel's Spider-Man, but, really, Insomniac's Spider-Man. Crystal Dynamics are a great team, I think, and I felt for that team last night as they bounced their presentations off the hollow basin of an LA theatre. On paper, they had the mix right: something new, but something old and familiar. But the volumes were wrong. The recipe was wrong. The door rolled up and the smoke poured forth and I did not recognise the silhouettes.

It would cost them a fortune to get likeness and voices, wouldn't it.

I don't mind if it's totally different look as Marvel exist before the MCU. The gameplay is more important at this stage.

I don’t think anyone is saying they should have got the likenesses and the voices. People are arguing they should have gone for a more distinctive art style rather than the generic look they’ve gone for. They have the rights to some stuff like the movie costumes which they’ve used but it leaves it in this weird, uncanny valley situation where it looks like a dodgy knock off.

Ultimate Alliance 3 have got most of the cast from the Avengers animated series to do voices (EMH series) they could have went that route.

Also, I wonder if this ties into the ‘Marvel Gamer verse’ that Spider-Man started?

Gamescom footage has leaked

1: The VOs are still strawberry floating horrible, like really bad impressions done by a comedy club compare
2: Thor = Kratos, Stark = a Javelin. Like, straight up the devs looked at those mechanics and went yoink.
3: I know this is the intro but the gameplay is interrupted every 5 strawberry floating seconds by a cutscene apparently.
4: Hard to tell off the screen but that is a fugly looking game.

I looks like a crappy movie tie in, the type from the 360/PS3 era that they seemed to have stopped bothered making.

Also worth noting this, which is the gameplay they plan to release in August, is the same footage that was at their E3 booth

There's more footage this time showing off Hulk and Black Widow.

Oh and God of War's (2018) combat designer is working on this so that's something positive.
