They've released 3 new singles since 1970.

Ah, I know but every five years or so there's some new way to flog a dead horse. Beatles Anthology, Beatles 1s, Beatles Rock Band, Yesterday, Get Back doc, AI song. There was an article in The Times last year when the Elvis movie was released, and how his estate and others (e.g. Abba Voyage) pay millions to teams who help think up ways keep the brand relevant and update it for new audiences. I'm just very done with the 60s. Got it. Let's move on.

Maybe if modern music wasn't an absolute bag of banana split then people wouldn't be so fixated on arguably the greatest group of songwriters ever.

Nobody forces you to buy, watch or listen to it.

The only reason documentaries, remasters and new songs are released is because people still enjoy them.

It's weird how the "move on" and "they are too old" comments only relate to pop/rock/rap acts. It's not like people ever moan about a new adaptation of Shakespeare or the London Philharmonic producing a new concert of Mozart's music.

Oh for God’s sake, not another Mozart concert. :fp: The thing I’d say is, that it’s a really good song in it’s own right so what’s the problem? Is there anything else in the charts as good?? (And don’t blame me for being a Grandad! It’s just all so incredibly boring. I’m sure there’s plenty of good modern music out there but most of it is just commercial shite. About the most up to date stuff I listen to is Aphex Twin. Oh, btw I’m also very keen on Mozart!!)

I'm not a fan of the Beatles but I do find this a bit odd. They're a band with a huge cultural impact. They might not be to my taste but I'd no more want society to "move on" from them than I would other bands that I like from the 70's/80's/90's. If people didn't want to listen to them then they'd fade away. My best advice, from someone who doesn't like them, is don't listen to their songs, don't watch films about them and enjoy the music you want to listen to. It works a treat for me.

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

This isn't a dig at you personally!

I find it just as weird when middle aged people moan about modern music being rubbish. It's not made for you! The miserable old people of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s all hated new music as well and would happily tell everyone that music was better in their day.

Just let people enjoy what they enjoy.

No worries. Modern music IS made for me - I don’t think there is a single genre or age date of music where I don’t like some of it from Gregorian Chant to Rap. But I only like the best, genuine creative artist driven music and far too much these days is just driven by record companies/producers and not by people genuinely trying to create. I think we probably need another wave of punk before we all die of sheer boredom!

Exactly.

Also, while Beatles music has been around for a long time, it is still being discovered for the first time and enjoyed by a lot of people (many of whom weren't even born when the songs were first being released, including us), which is why the market is still there for the extra things like docs and new tracks.

Exactly. Exactly!

Good music is good music regardless of where, when, by whom etc. it was created. Good music is universal and timeless. All you need when listening is, as the Buddhists say, ‘Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind’! Enough drivel from me!

History should stay in the past!

This is number 1, no surprise, of course.

I really don't think it's only boomers keeping interest in the Beatles alive. The music is timeless.

I'm also not at all convinced boomers have a strangehold over pop culture. That's the one area they don't, I'd argue.

Not a stranglehold, but they certainly were the creators and/or the audience for a lot of pop culture that's still going strong. Star Wars/Trek, superheroes (started slightly earlier but were huge in the 60s), etc. Older music very rarely gets a look in with the singles chart, but there's a lot of old bands/singers that still appear in the albums chart every week.

It's not a bad thing though. I'm angry with boomers for pulling the ladder up behind them in the property market, I don't have a problem with Spider-Man still being popular.

I'd say that's more to do with decades of crap governments rather than older people.

And which group of people have been most likely to vote Tory over the last few decades?
