I can recommend one of these bad boys:

http://www.macsbbq.com/hot-smokers/proq ... bbq-smoker

The quality is great and this size is perfect if you are planning to frequently cook for for friends. There are smaller (for a couple of people) and larger (for the 5000) versions available.
It comes in sections so you actually get a very portable standard BBQ included in the package.

Got to be gas BBQ with wood chips. Instant and controllable heat. No strawberry floating about.

Not only viable - but optimal.

All jokes aside, I am being completely serious. My mum and her cheffy ex-colleagues swear by the fact that perceived "superiority" of charcoal is complete horse gooseberry fool. Charcoal is crap. It imparts no taste, is faff to control the heat and is messy. A wood fired BBQ would have benefit, but nothing you can't get with wood chips.

I'm sure everyone in your house will thank you for putting smoking chips into the oven.

Just to give Mr Gas Man the floor for a second, how easy is it to get the gas? Where do you buy the requisite tanks from? How much are they? How long do they last? Is it risky to leave them in your garage?

Not sure how it works in the UK but here just about every filling station has the little bottles, you bring back your old one and carry away a new one. Can easily get 10 or so BBQs out of one and Ive never heard of anyone having an incident with them.

Petrol station. Very easy to find. About 30 quid plus refundable deposit for cannister. For how long it will last, how often do you bbq? The last one i refilled has 1/3 left and is on its third summer at on average once a fortnight use (we use it midweek a lot - gas no faff!!!). Danger - none. But propane is a little more pricey and does not freeze so can be used all year.

Sweet.

At the risk of being flamed (hey-oooo) I am a little tempted by gas.

You can get gas with charcoal briquettes too if you think it imparts some magical property, bottles last forever

All you want is a controllable flame you can get going in a second and keep it happy any day of the week

Typical southern nancy boys with their gas BBQs & tiny knobs. Us northerners are MEN who go down t'mine & gather coal & bring it back t'barbecue at 'ome on't newly laid patio.

We've got both. Gas BBQ that we've had for years, and we built a brick one the other year along with a new patio for more social BBQs. I've only ever cooked with charcoal BBQs, but it's always a bit irritating waiting for the whole thing to warm up before you can start.

I'd love one of those massive ones you always see in garden centres with the burner on the side and a rotisserie (sp?) and stuff, but I think I'll probably wait until I've got my own place to splash out on one of those.
