Briquettes are hit and miss for me, will never go back after the banana splits went out about 2/3 through me getting my cook on.
Had 2 BBQ’s the past fortnight, and use those brown bags you just set fire to and leave for 20 minutes. They kick off mad heat for ages, well deece. Some real gourmet gooseberry fool going on lads.

Briquettes are banana splits. Lumpwood charcoal all the way, 20 minutes in the bbq lighter chimney thing, pour into the BBQ and get your meat on.

Thought my brother was nuts for asking for one of those for his birthday one year but having seen it in action I was impressed.

You win this round outdoors gas grill people :capnscotty:

Get yourself a chimney starter.

Fill the top with briquettes, stuff the bottom with paper, light the paper, wait for ash on the topmost briquettes. BBQ ready for food in 20 minutes. Bosh. :capnscotty:

Brilliant them Got one a couple of weeks ago. Game changer.

I'd love to post in here but it will quickly defend into the sky and inexplicable 'outdoor grill' thing that I've never understood.

If you need a special Fisher-Price My First BBQ™ tool in order to cook properly then basically you are not fit for barbecuing!

TBF that does look handy and anything that keeps people away from gas is a win.

Gas BBQ's. :dread:

The taste comes from fat dripping on the rocks and the smoke it produces. Nothing more.

If it makes you feel superior cooking on coal then all power to you but you're not getting anything different.

Is a Weber bbq worth the extra cost do you think? I can't see why they're so much more expensive.

Homebase has a kettle bbq for say £40 the same size weber is £150

For camping we've got a son of hibachi, which is incredible for drunken barbecues :datass:

It works in the same way as that chimney starter and is good to cook on for about an hour if you use the right charcoal.

The main barbecue we have is pretty big and gets hot to the point of being an incinerator if you're not careful. I've always struggled to get briquettes to work properly with it though and always favour lumpwood, which explains why ive got this half arsed bag of briquettes going mouldy in the garage. They'll probably work great in the hibachi though, so I might try that for a small lunch burger and kebab tomorrow.

In all honesty I don't particularly have a problem with gas, I agree that in reality the taste of something cooked on gas compared to coal is pretty much identical.

It's more the ritual of coal cooking that makes it special

That de-escalated quickly

I can appreciate the ritual being a thing. I've just rubbed too many clothes from coal

Oh yeah coal definitely comes with inherent risks!

I do like the convenience that gas brings. Whilst the ritual of coal is great and for me makes a BBQ feel like more of an "event" than just a meal it is undoubtedly more of faff and takes longer. If I had a gas BBQ I know for a fact that I would have used it a lot more over the last few weeks!

Seriously man, what is this 'outdoor grill' thing? How many people do see cooking indoors over hot rocks?

From this mornings research, it would look like you're paying a premium for the brand that doesn't equal the jump in quality you'd expect for the cost. If I was made of money I'd definitely get one.
