It's all assembled now. Quite the beast really, much higher quality than I was expecting. Got it in the temporary gas grill area ready to go tomorrow if the weather behaves:

I love the way yesterday was lovely but windy, and the forecast for today was to be warmer, so we committed to having an outdoor microwave today. Its our wedding anniversary, and we had plans to sit in the garden all day drinking wine and eating.

It's currently white sky, really windy and freezing with no sign of it changing

I have solved the gas vs charcoal debate.
Why choose one? Get you a BBQ that can do both.

Though I've not used the charcoal side yet, I just grilled some mackerel on the gas side and it came out great.

Not sure if it's just the perspective of the shots but that looks really low down! Do you have to squat on the floor whilst cooking or something?

Must just be perspective. Never felt it was low when using it.

Although it's probably not as high as those gas set up frauds.

I only microwave my nuggets for 30 seconds so they don't burn my mouth. I favour the dinosaur shaped ones.

Yeah nice job Ste! How'd you go about setting it up? Did you follow a plan or design it yourself?

Somettting you could do on that is add another row of holder bricks on top, then you could either move the grill plate up and down according to how much heat it's putting out, or have a smaller plate higher at the back to use like a warming area.

The brick structure was already in place when I bought the house so can't take credit for that. I'm sure it wouldn't take a brick layer long to put one up though.

You can buy a basic charcoal grate, ash tray and grill set from Amazon/Argos for about £40.That what I'd always used up to now.

They quite flimsy though and the charcoal grate had warped quite a lot due to the heat.

Decided I'd see what I could upgrade too in view of all this lockdown/no holidays abroad business.

The charcoal grate/Ash tray cost about £70 from Sunshine BBQ and the cast iron grill about £60 from ManoMano.

There definitely is something special about a brick built barbecue, fair play.

In an ideal world where I had the money and space (and we had the climate to make use of it!) I'd love a nice brick barbecue as well as a real wood fired pizza oven in the garden as well.

The state of that trellis That whole area is getting revamped at some point, probably a little out building so it's all temporary. It annoys me the slabs aren't centred too so they need to be shifted over.

Unaligned trellis of two different colours,
Slabs not central,
Dry loose leaves left dangerously close to cooking area,
Two decorative stones allowed to escape and sit mockingly on top of brickwork,
Outdoor microwave in place of a Real Mans Barbecue™
Failed effort to remove sticker from said microwave
What appears to be a plant pot just sat inside a gap in the trellis,
Outdoor bulbs that look like they were purchased from Etsy or some gooseberry fool...


This is basically a strawberry floating disaster zone. How could you even think of posting this in here!
