My local game store is running a launch event on Friday, it's a bit more expensive at £53, but I feel like I should support them. (Plus I have £20 store credit ;) )

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

I'm probably not going to order for now as I've spent a lot on other things recently but thanks for the pointer. I've stuck a camelcamelcamel on the Amazon listing at £40 so if it ever drops below that then I might dive in.

I've also got Flash Point coming soon which I've heard good things about but haven't yet played myself.

Finally my group have finally reached the half way point of our Charterstone game having played 6 of the 12 rounds. As a first legacy game I'm finding it interesting. I find the changes each round and introduction of new elements keeps things fresh. Intriguing to see how the latter rounds develop and to see who might win as it's very difficult at the moment to establish who might be leading overall.

Flamme Rouge is great. Get the free companion app and you can run Grand Tours. Expansion is worth a look too but a bit pricey.

Flamme Rouge is great. I took it into work and played it with my colleagues at lunch and they all loved it - particularly how competitive it was watching someone make a break for the line but running out of steam and just getting pipped to the post. Will definitely check out the app. As you mentioned, the expansion is a bit pricey so might wait for a deal on that!

The Telegraph have done a Best Boardgames For Christmas list and it's... Surprisingly good. A few really rather obscure gems in there

Monopoly at number 2, one of the worst board games of all time.

strawberry float me thats a bad list. In more heartening news, my small town local sells-a-bit-of-everything-including-toys shop stocks Ticket To Ride and Catan so the good stuff is stating to get out there slowly but surely.

That's incredible
A list by someone who doesn't play boardgames, and had to remember some they'd once played for this article.

Jaws

I really liked that - the theme helped but it’s a compact yet meaty package with plenty of game to it for £20

The first act is stronger I think and whomever goes into Act 2 in the stronger position has a real advantage but it’s still really fun.

The biggest issue is that after Act 1 you have a new game type and rules to explain. Given we started at 8pm it was a bit late to do that but that’s just us and well not have problem in future.

Marvel Champions

Didn't love this in either my practice solo play (2 handed) or 3 player actual game.

It's mechanically pretty solid, but it's...bland. It does somethings well - and the use of others abilities and the Defend options means there's less down time when it's not your turn.

Of your 40-50 card deck 15 are specific to your hero. 10(ish) are from a standard set everyone shares (and in the core set all 5 heros have the same ones). The remaining 10-15 are from an aspect (Protection/Agression etc) that you pick when you deck build (any hero can be any aspect, and then you pick from all available cards in that aspect to make your deck)

15/40 is pretty hard to make your hero "feel" like their identidy. The cards there are quite thematic, but they're the minority of your deck. And when you see other people playing the same standard cards (e.g. Hellicarrier) everything begins to feel a bit homogenous. The aspects help differentiate from each other but I'm not sure an Agression Spiderman would feel that much different from an Agression She-Hulk.

Which is a shame because I think the actual mechanics are solid, but it's theme feels missing. While expansion packs will add more standard/aspect cards so you'll see more variety (and synergy) I'm not sure it'll ever get past that 15/40+ issue to help the fantasy of playing a specific hero. It mostly made me want to dig out Sentinals where every hero deck is unique throughout for that hero and tied to their powers/abilities.

I've got a pretty decent collection of games built up but most recently I've been adoring Quacks of Quedlinberg. I usually enjoy a thoughtful Euro but I've been really pleasantly surprised how much I've been enjoying the simple fun of Quacks. The bag building is so moreish!

Anyone else played this game?

Pandemic Legacy 1 - November

This wrecked us. We went in feeling that it might be easy/simple - but we lost both tries. Convincingly. Felt like bad luck of the draw more than bad choices but all in all rather dispiriting.

We'd managed to get 2/3rds of faded cities immunised, but a bad Epidemic phase set up and set off a chain of yellow outbreaks (about 4 in a row) - losing us our research station in South America. Combined with cities now panicing/rioting yellow is now by far our biggest problem. It's near impossible to get into and move around.

A similar bad draw finished attempt 2

I've got a copy of Quacks. It's a fun and unpredictable game and due to the luck based nature of the drawing it evens the playing field so anyone can win on a given day. Always hilarious seeing someones outrage at drawing 4 whites in a row when their bag contains 20 non-white tiles!

Yesterday played my first game of Everdell. It's a nicely themed worker placement game. In our game through a combination of luck drawing the right cards and constructing some good locations I was able to win quite comprehensively though.

I had some serious arguments with my group in November saying it was better to plan to lose game 1 November to set up better for December. I didnt need to work against the group to achieve this though, pretty sure the game made the decision for them.

Yeah I was seriously pushing for immunizing as much as possible of Faded cities as it has long term benefits, assuming no serves in December, as well as blowing up as many military bases as we good and fully prepared to lose November (Early) to do so. But they resisted a bit (we've got more time) and the November blew up so we didn't get any bases. And similar happened in Nov (Late).

It's the first time I've felt a bit down on the game as both times weren't really our fault, but the longterm (well one month) consequences are going to be devastating
