Only playing board games like Monopoly and Risk is a bit like only playing video games like the original Mario Bros. or Zelda. This isn't me being elitist, it's just to say that there have been wonderful, immeasurably better games released over the past ten to fifteen years that aren't as tedious as strawberry float.

I'd rather just play Trivial Pursuit.

My favourite game I own is probably The Resistance. Similar to Werewolf but more focused. Although Catan and Bang! run it close - although there is a bunch of games I want. :(

I watch The Dice Tower so so much as well!

There is nothing wrong with Risk whatsoever, nor is there anything wrong with Trivial Pursuit.

But jesus christ - Monopoly! How this game ever became popular I don't know - it is a broken mess of a game that always results in a runaway winner and arguments - IT IS AN ARGUMENT IN A BOX, WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO PLAY THIS gooseberry fool?

Would you honestly want to sit down and play through the original Legend of Zelda rather than something like Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker or Skyward Sword?

I would! It is so much fun winning and seeing the board get thrown to the other side of the room. Childhood memories

I don't really know any other board games apart from the old casual/popular ones. I used to like pictionary.

The original Mario no. The original Zelda yes.

But these are sequels, Monopoly and risk have sequal versions. Adding new rules, new paint styles, ect ect. Maybe they are more like 'remakes' than sequels though. But when you said that I was thinking of OOT and M64 to be fair.

Obligatory mention for the guys at Sit Down and Shut Up - http://www.shutupshow.com/

It's basically the Consolevania of board game shows, which is about as much praise as I can give. Their written stuff is always worth a read too.

I'm recently getting into them- own a copy of Pandemic and play Munchkin. I seem to remember playing a game about a year ago I really liked- can't remember what it was, but involved three types of resources and shipping as many of them off as possible? I'd love to play more but don't really have the environment for it.

Again, Magic: The Gathering probably doesn't class as a board game and I miss out on a discussion thread!

Shadow wrote:Has anyone played Risk Legacy yet?

It's the best board game I've ever played by about a hundred times. It is absolutely incredible.

You will need:

5 committed players
1 weekend or equivalent time period (the game is made of 15 "rounds" each lasting 1-2 hours)
loads of beer and snacks

The game is much better if you can lock down a team of 5 who'll play the whole thing. You can probably swap in the odd player, but the core group needs to be the same.

DO NOT RESEARCH THIS GAME.

It is imperative that you do not learn the games secrets prior to playing, you MUST all go in blind. I cannot stress this enough. Any player knowing the game's secrets could ruin a lot of the fun for all of you.

The game is about £50. If you think that sounds expensive, don't worry. After 2 hours of play you will consider it to be the bargain of the century.

DO NOT RESEARCH THIS GAME.

I had a quick read-up on this earlier in the year and thought it sounded amazing. I haven't played any board games since I was at school but I really wish I'd stuck with them. The problem now is that trying to find a few like minded souls to play them with isn't the easiest. As with video games, any mention of them in 'grown up' circles gets the sort of reaction seen in the video clip in the OP.

Looking forward to seeing what else gets mentioned in here that's worth a look.

Oh aye, Robert Florence (of previously mentioned Consolevania fame) does a column for Rock, Paper Shotgun on this very topic. Looks like he hasn't done one for a while but they're a good read. The Heroquest one in particular is worth a look.

Worth mentioning that Risk Legacy I mentioned on the previous page should not be tarred with the same brush as vanilla Risk. They're similar in the sense that they have little men and a map, but that's pretty much it.

I think the only reason Risk Legacy has the Risk name is because Hasbro were too scared to release it as a new IP.

Is this 7 wonders then?

If it is then it's probably put me off playing as it does look complicated (probably not for me but family/friends) Looks more like Magic the gathering - thought it was a board game.

One game me and my friends always used to play at middle school on the last day of term was this.

Such an epic game. Ridiculously difficult but soooo much fun.

That's 7 people playing 7 Wonders, which is why it looks a bit cluttered. Really, all you have to focus on for the most part is your own set of cards. It's so, so accessible, honestly.

From what I remember it was like Risk, I'd love to know for sure what it was.

It has an excellent iOS version if you're interested, as do Carcassonne, Catan and Ticket to Ride.

I've loved board games for quite some time, but it's a rare treat when I actually convince anyone to play the things with me. Here's my list:

Settlers of Catan
Carcassonne
Ticket to Ride: Europe
La Havre (never played because it's incomprehensible :shifty: )
Prophecy
Battlestar Galactica
Dungeoneer
Zombies!!!
Munchkin
Risk
Lord of the Rings Risk
Risk (2008) (Believe it or not, I actually don't much like Risk)
Summoner Wars
Wrath of Ashardalon
The Legend of Drizzt
Arkham Horror
Space Hulk (3rd Edition)
Starcraft
Battlelore
Lord of the Rings

I think that's it. :shifty:

Like I said though, I hardly ever get to play the things. Most of those have only been played once, so I don't bother to buy new games as much as I used to. There's a board game group that meets in Birmingham once a month, so I've been meaning to check that out at some point.
