Wot I've been playing:

Legendary, a co-operative Marvel-based LCG. If you've played Dominion then you'll 'get' the basic mechanics of the game very quickly. Building up a deck of heroes, each of which can be used to generate either more recruitment points (to buy more cards), or fight points to take out villains. Probably the most impressive thing about it is the variety of scenarios and "schemes" there are to play through - you build up a collaborate five-person hero team before beginning (Rogue is OP and I bloody love it), choose a mastermind to fight against (Loki, Magneto, Dr. Doom or Redskull in the base set) and a specific plot that you're trying to foil (ranging from prison breaks to total planetary annihilation). The beauty of it is that the win/lose requirements for each game change drastically depending on what combination of the above you're playing with, so each game has the potential to genuinely feel different than the last. Lots of potential for expansion with new character/scenario decks too. I'm a fan.

And my unbeaten record in Blood Bowl Team Manager continues. Think I might actually prefer it to the main game to be honest - it's certainly quicker and more accessible, without losing much of the 'spirit' of Blood Bowl. But undoubtedly a better experience to be had if you're already familiar with the characters and teams involved.

Board games.

Had a pretty good game of Articulate at dinner on Friday. Until someone spilled wine all over the cards. (Probably me)

Had some people round today and as there were five of us we played a board game instead of video games.

It was fun. Didn't play a very tactical game though, just tried to piss people off.

Played Monopoly Millionaire last night with the gf and 2 friends. It was pretty good, bit different to vanilla Monopoly in that the first player to get to £1,000,000 wins. I came last  :fp:

For a Monopoly game it was actually quite a speedy affair, we got it finished in about an hour. Probably aimed towards the vacuous-celeb/bling-towie crowd that get bored with longer games/everything.

Good for a laugh though.

Played this with my folks over Xmas, one of the few games I think they would enjoy and it went down a treat.

Had a mammoth game of BSG last night for Hogmanay, was playing with the Pegasus expansion. Humans were getting beasted the whole game :x At the end, of the 4 humans, 2 escaped on Galactica leaving me and a mate to die on New Caprica. This brought morale down to 2 so Dualla (who was on the ship) had her negative ability kick in and she killed herself so only 1 of the humans actually lived...

It was a moral victory :fp:

I'm one of those 'I only play board games at Christmas' arseholes but I might keep it up this year, since I've had a lot of fun! I've been playing this old game I found in my parents' house called Kingmaker:

Image

Anyone ever play it? It's a strategy game set during the War of the Roses. It's very interesting but, as with most strategy games I've ever played, it seems almost impossible to win or lose. We keep giving up after 5 hours of stalemate! Still been enjoying it though. :)

For Christmas I picked up Incan Gold, The Dwarf King and King Of Tokyo. I'm pleased with all three although I am yet to play The Dwarf King which is a trick taking game.

Had a mammoth board/card game session on new years eve (14 hours +), played Pandemic, Forbidden Island, Red November, Fluxx (Cthulhu and Monty Python), Aye Dark Overlord, Murder of Crows and Gloom. Good times, especially playing Murder of Crows while listening to Iron Maiden as it struck 12 8-)

Has anyone played that Twilight Struggle that is considered the best board game ever ever ever by some? I'm considering picking it up along with one for more players like 7 Wonders or Ticket to Ride.

My brother's friend handed him Android: Netrunner and Infiltration the other day, simply because he had copies spare (mental, right? These things are pricey) and I was looking into buying into this 'golden age of board games' that has apparently come about.

I've played it and it is very good. Rules are simple enough to understand but actually playing the game can be quite complicated. Most of the game is down to strategy and skill although you do have the luck aspect through what cards you draw and the occasional dice rolls.

edit: Might be worth reading some of the stuff on here, especially the annotated games to see if it's up your street. http://twilightstrategy.com/

edit2: And you can actually play it online for free I think.

Been playing Libertalia (great fun, not too long to play either), City of Horror (YES), Star Trek Fleet Captains (bit slow with four people), DreadBall (Blood Bowl alternative from Mantic) and Spartacus: Blood and Sand (well, its not called B&S but its based on the series).

I've got Spartacus (mainly from RockPaperShotgun's recommendation), but have yet to play it, I assume it's as back-stabby and traitorous as it implies?

Tempted to go to another Waterstones nearby to see if they have any more half price boardgames after my haul yesterday - haven't played King of Tokyo yet, but the rules are super-simple and it could be a great 'palette-cleanser' between bigger, more serious games.

I like King Of Tokyo a lot, it oozes theme, is very tactical - but there is that push your luck element to it as well. Also everyone gets into it, but I get a bit frustrated because sometimes even though they love these games they just want to go back to Catan and even Cluedo all the time, where I want to try new games. I now own about twenty indie games and I'm very happy with the majority of them. However, I wanna know if I buy more that they would get played.
