It does have a solo variant ruleset in the rule book if that is the case. I originally bought it to play with my games group and we only managed to play it once so I just opted to play it solo and I don't think my enjoyment diminished because of that. The only downside is that I saw less of the characters than I may have otherwise as I only played with two characters so didn't have a huge opportunity to unlock more.

Jaws of the Lion is certainly a great option if you think Gloomhaven is too big and expensive. It has an excellent tutorial, which the original was lacking. The first 5 scenarios gradually introduce the rules and slowly give you more complicated cards. It's really well done.

I might ask for Jaws of the Lion for Christmas. Sounds like a good purchase and if we really love it, it'll lead into the big box game at a later date.

If 365games had it in stock then I'd have ordered it myself (they're currently do 10% off board games). Still tempted though as it looks good.

Away to play Twilight Imperium with some friends tomorrow. Second time we've had a go: last month we played for 6 straight hours and were nowhere near the endgame, though that was probably down to us learning as we went.

I liked it. Hopefully this time there'll be more off the board negotiations and the like as last time we were so concentrated on the rules that nothing like that really went down.

Played Root for the first time on Wednesday night which was great. Took us three hours to get through though as it has four different factions and each one plays completely different so I imagine it's going to take a while before the games are quicker.

Jealous of anybody who is able to play boardgames at the moment.

We did manage to complete our Pandemic Legacy Season 2 run in the summer, but that was just in case we were caught in a Jumanji-like deal.

Picked up Quacks of Quedlinburg this week after seeing it mentioned in here and had our first game last night. A lot of unpacking  and took a while to get into the swing of things but great fun once it clicked! Hoping to play a bit more over the weekend.

I'm looking at splashing out on a decent two player game, since most of the games I own are at best playable with only two and I obviously can't play with a wider group right now (not that I tended to anyway).

Anyone got any recommendations for stuff that's come out recently? Did Imperial Struggle end up being any good?

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion

Fantasy RPG with excellent combat and a campaign to wrap it in. My wife and I did mission 5 at the weekend and we both love it. It's so exciting and we feel like our characters are really unique and personal to each of us.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've considered base Gloomhaven before but I think we probably need to steer clear from the living game type experiences, because I think there's a risk we would just end up with this enormous box that becomes a chore to get into.

I also have the beta version on Steam although that doesn't have local co-op.

If you're in the mood for gritty Lovecraftian horror (both in theme and gamefeel) Arkham Horror Living Card Game is excellent.

It's super tough but I've played several campaigns through with a mate and we always ended up shocked and/or laughing uproariously at the horrible things that befell us. If you have Tabletop Simulator there's an incredible mod with every single pack and expansion released (including rare con only stuff) and it's marvelously well automated. The print version is very well made too and looks lovely.

EDIT:

Arkham Horror LCG is what I'm basing that on actually! We played the first act of the base campaign and quite liked the theme and gameplay, but struggled with the second act to the point that we were put off diving into the rest of the expanding series.

I still have the first main expansion set sitting there unopened as a Christmas present from a couple of years ago, which I feel guilty about...

It is suuuuuper hard. I found the base campaign to be a good deal tougher than a lot of the exansions, especially that second mission!

Dark descent 2 has been amazing to play co-op. We use the official companion app and it runs the game for you (plays the DM role).
