Are there any good Star Wars board games. Preferably that make no mention of the prequels.

GRCade board-game meetup go? :shifty:

It has an excellent iOS version if you're interested, as do Carcassonne, Catan and Ticket to Ride.

I've loved board games for quite some time, but it's a rare treat when I actually convince anyone to play the things with me. Here's my list:

Settlers of Catan
Carcassonne
Ticket to Ride: Europe
La Havre (never played because it's incomprehensible :shifty: )
Prophecy
Battlestar Galactica
Dungeoneer
Zombies!!!
Munchkin
Risk
Lord of the Rings Risk
Risk (2008) (Believe it or not, I actually don't much like Risk)
Summoner Wars
Wrath of Ashardalon
The Legend of Drizzt
Arkham Horror
Space Hulk (3rd Edition)
Starcraft
Battlelore
Lord of the Rings

I think that's it. :shifty:

Like I said though, I hardly ever get to play the things. Most of those have only been played once, so I don't bother to buy new games as much as I used to. There's a board game group that meets in Birmingham once a month, so I've been meaning to check that out at some point.

I desperately need to find an iPhone then, haha. Do you have more info on the Birmingham one at all? It's something I'd be eager to try and attend.

Fantasy Flight are developing an X-Wing miniatures game and a Star Wars LCG that might be good. Other than that I don't think there are, at least not in print.

Mogster, I sold a complete copy of LOTR: Risk (with the exapansion) on ebay last year for over seventy quid. Just saying.

I also sold my copy of the recent Space Hulk reprint. I miss it every day.

I don't have the LOTRO Risk expansion, but I might consider parting with it. I got it for free after all. :shifty:

As for Space Hulk, how could you? :o

As you say - very difficult to find someone willing to play that sort of game. Plus, and this is bordering on blasphemy I know, but... Space Hulk isn't actually that *fun* to play, especially if you're the marines. Very quickly becomes a case of "Overwatch or die".

Plus it got me £130. :shifty:

Was it Puerto Rico? You can play a online version of it too for free if you google it, anyway it's an amazing game and fully deserves to be ranked 3rd best board game on that board game geek site!

That's the one, Puerto Rico. I remember playing it to kill some time before an MTG FNM and ending up not even playing in the FNM.

I spunked a silly amount of money on the 10th Anniversary Edition of this last week. Totally worth it 8-)

Played Game of Thrones first edition today (with some of the Clash of King expansion) for the first time since playing the second edition. Some interesting rule changes they made to 2nd edition that I had t really appreciated. Think 2nd edition is a more balanced experience, despite the random battle modifier cards.

It's the best board game I've ever played by about a hundred times. It is absolutely incredible.

You will need:

5 committed players
1 weekend or equivalent time period (the game is made of 15 "rounds" each lasting 1-2 hours)
loads of beer and snacks

The game is much better if you can lock down a team of 5 who'll play the whole thing. You can probably swap in the odd player, but the core group needs to be the same.

DO NOT RESEARCH THIS GAME.

It is imperative that you do not learn the games secrets prior to playing, you MUST all go in blind. I cannot stress this enough. Any player knowing the game's secrets could ruin a lot of the fun for all of you.

The game is about £50. If you think that sounds expensive, don't worry. After 2 hours of play you will consider it to be the bargain of the century.

DO NOT RESEARCH THIS GAME.

I've heard some things about this game, mostly about how fantastic it is and how I shouldn't look it up. So tempted to get it, whenever I have 50 quid spare I will do :P

Lego Grand Theft Auto... You KNOW you would buy it.

It's basically the Consolevania of board game shows, which is about as much praise as I can give. Their written stuff is always worth a read too.

Obligatory seconding. It's well written, charming whimsical, and their affection and enthusiasm for the medium is untterly infectious.

Lately I've enjoyed Dungeon Quest. Any game that kills you on turn two and forces you to watch the rest of your friends have fun without you is too deliciously cruel to ignore. But then, it wasn't me who died, so I would think that.

Hah, timely thread. I bought the Ticket to Ride iPad app about a week ago, and I fell in love with it so much I went and bought the physical game. Now I'm looking for more.

Every board game should really have a companion app like that, I think. The low barrier to entry, AI opponents and online play make it really easy to test out and get in some actual games without the hassle of having to gather a crowd at your house. With the option still there to graduate to the real thing if you can get enough people hooked on the app.

Nice thread!

Some of my personal favourites are...

Survive - Escape from Atlantis

Image

Escape the island before it falls to the sea. Get your people to the islands but watch out for sharks, whales and sea monsters as you cross the sea.

I love this game, you start by placing your 10 people across the island, under each counter is a point value. You can't check these during the game, and you opponents can't see, so you must remember which people are worth more and who to save. Also, you can move in boats which hold 3 people, meaning you can hop in someone elses boat (majority moves it) which can lead to funny suicidal moments.

When the game starts you take turns removing an island tile (sand, forest, mountain) and take 3 turns to move your people. The fun is in screwing your friends over, destroying their people and hoping you got the high value one. It's a bit like poker, got to read your opponent to guess which of their people are worth the most.

The game ends when the volcano tile is flipped (under one of the mountains).

Tikal

Image

Collect as much treasure before the 3 volcanoes go off. Take turns moving your explorers around uncovering new temples and treasure.

This is a fun game where you explore the amazon finding temples and uncovering treasure. It's a little hard to explain but you basically screw your friends over a lot while being very tactical. You have 10 actions per turn, these actions can be moving, creating new explorers or uncovering treasure. A new tile is laid each turn, to move between tiles has a cost (actions) so you have to be careful how you use them.

There are 3 volcano tiles, when one is uncovered, a scoring round starts. This is where it fuels the tactical thinking. A temple is scored by whoever has the most markers on the tile. So you have to anticipate your opponents and get on the temple tiles before the volcano.

I'm terrible at explaining this but it's good fun once you get into it.

Other games, Ticket to Ride (of course), Revolution and 7 Wonders. I really like Revolution, you should try that one.

Oh and this is a picture from our last trip to Denmark for a board game weekend:

You're clearly a man who loves his Volcanoes!

Both those sound quite good though, might have to giev them a try.

I love anything with treasure, islands and sharks. Which reminds me of another great game where you go around an island in jeeps trying to find treasure, the location is never told but you draw cards and have to deduct where it is then race to it.

Next board game night is May 5th, can't wait!

Oh and EVERYONE needs to own Animal Upon Animal:

Image

It's basically animal Jenga. Take turns stacking animals, you roll a dice to say how many you must stack. On the dice is also an option to give one of your animals for someone else to stack, your opponents choose which animal you stack, extend base and finally, just add 1 or 2 animals. First to clear all animals wins, collect animals you knock over. Fun while drunk, mix it up into a drinking game for maximum laughs
