How long are the games?

They're supposed to be fairly short 30mins-1hr I think. The objective is to earn 4 stars and you initially start off with 2. I think ours took a bit longer was because we had two people who just couldn't understand the basic rules of Risk

It's intermediate, but large is probably the way to go if you're on board for the next cycle, given how quickly I ran out of space.

With the last few packs, I had to abandon splitting out all the encounter sets and just group them up in two big 'cycle' piles "Core"/"Dunwich". When deconstructing a scenario, I'll group the individual sets back together before putting them in the cycle pile so they're easier to find again.

I could put an icon cheatsheet on the inside of the lid to build up scenarios faster, but I couldn't really be bothered, and instead just take an educated guess as to which of the two piles I'm likely to find the set I'm looking for in.

I really wish FFG would put out digital versions of their LCGs, tbh. The storage is a nightmare and when you get it everything sorted so that it's easy to find, you have to spend ages shuffling to make the game random enough.

Yeah I've been looking at printing Dividers off for them with the symbols/logos on (there's some good fan made ones on BGG, but I don't have a decent printer)

I think I might go large and keep the player cards out of the box...I'd like to keep each scenario and encounter set (basically each symbol) separate though ideally

Anyone played A Game of Thrones Board Game by Fantasy Flight? I really want a strategy game of that ilk but not sure how easy it'll be for friends to pick up and get invested.

Might be worth looking online to see if there are any board game clubs or decent shops near you. I've recently found one myself in Lincoln which I'll check out.

There's probably one at the University I used to attend, no idea if non/former students would be welcome to attend though.

There's a shop in Middlesbrough called Tau Gaming that often has people playing Magic the Gathering in it so I wouldn't be surprised if they do Board Game days/nights or something too, might need to look into it.

I think so - but it's £90 so it there were caveats.

It was interesting done in a "table top strategy/fighter" sort of way - but I recall reviews saying it was average/good (elevated by theme a little bit if you like Dark Souls). £90 seemed to put lots of a game if not spectacular.

I was in the queue to try it at the Expo recently - but then walked away at the price point without a playtest.

Dark Souls is excellent if you're a fan of the videogames. It captures the essence of the gameplay perfectly. It is Dark Souls as a board game. There's a card-based version of it due as well for about £30, so that's less offensive to the wallet.

If they're doing a RE2 game, I have faith that they'll do an equally great job capturing what people love about the source material.

God damn it, another Kickstarter that I'm gonna have to back. Resi 2 miniatures alone will force my hand.

Had a look there but the nearest one to me is in Hartlepool according to that which isn't too far I suppose.

Ironically there's one within a few hundred metres of where I work, but going t osomething like that after work isn't really much of an option with the way my shifts are.

It's a game we've played a few times in my group and love, but it is a bit daunting on the first play through. Takes a while to learn the rules but it's definitely a great strategy game once everyone has managed to grasp it.

Finally caved and bought the Arkham Horror LCG starter box.

Yeah boi. You really might want to invest in a custom insert too. Usually I do without, but given the sheer number of cards you'll end up accumulating it's deffo worth it: takes organisation from about 30 minutes to less than 5 for me.

Also, god help me but I really want the new Twilight Imperium. I reckon I'd play it once, if ever, but still. Looks great.

Played some 7 Wonders Duel yesterday and it is indeed very good. Theres a good level of tension built into the game and its very tricky to plan ahead as everything you do will allow your opponent to do something against you. Theres very rarely a free pick in the sense that you can build something and not leave a good move open to your opponent. Hopefully Ill get to play a bit more of it in the near future.

Pandemic: Iberia

This is a bit good innit? Recognisable as Pandemic, but very very different mechanically.

The restrictions on movements are interesting - but it's the fact you can't "cure/eradicate" diseases that make the biggest difference. You're never "in control" - and there's constant pressure on disease cubes.

Rather than cure diseases - you focus on using pure water etc to limit their spread - but it means there's much much much more pressure than in normal Pandemic as you're never really able to "control" diseases (or stop worrying about certain colours)

I really like the travel mechanics, the map is small but you can move about surprisingly well even without direct flights. The sea ports help and The railway mechanic is great and opens up a lot of choice in how you approach the game.
