The latest Humble Bundle is board game themed, some good ones in there including Twilight Struggle.

Saw that, but most of the appeal for me is in the physicality of the games and being sat face to face playing one with someone.

Picked up the splendor cities expansion and pandemic for the Mrs, look forward to those on boxing day.

No doubt but sometimes it tough to find someone as enthusiastic about Star Realms as I am or get enough people together for a game of Colt Express so its nice to have a digital option.

Very true. I really want to get hero quest but it's really for 3+ players rather than 2 as one needs to DM, so I got a free rip off of it on my tablet to play.

I highly recommend Twilight Struggle, the greatest board game ever made.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Betrayal: Legacy

Huh.  Wasn't a huge fan of this. You are each playing a descendant of a family bloodline. So most games (set 20-30 years apart) are a different member (the last often having died :P) of that family, while some carry over (if you lived).

The guy who's game it is is playing with different people each time (sometimes some cross over, sometimes entirely new)

But...it's just Betrayal. I played Game 4 (out of 13) and I'd struggle to see what effect the legacy elements are. You'd added more "Omens" (Oh that's the haunted doll from week 3) and items can be "heirloomed" (Oh that's the Crumpet Family Crossbow! Members of the Crumpet family get an additional +1 beyond it's normal bonues). Some tiles have ghosts added to them (where people died) which can enhance card effects - but largely it's a game of Betrayal. Pandemic Legacy after 2 games we'd change diseases, the board, characters etc.

I don't think it helped we had a very boring "Betrayal" scenario as the base (other players said other scenarios had been stronger).

I enjoyed it because I enjoyed the people I played it with and the talk around the (so-so) game. But it felt like a more structured/defined game of betrayal (since you're not randomly picking one from an option of 20+) that didn't do much to deserve "legacy" idea.

Played a couple of our new board games yesterday, labyrinth and pandemic.

Labyrinth is really simple, just a piece to move each and cards showing treasure you have to move around the board to collect. Movement is based on you being able to go anywhere you'd directly be able to move within the path you're currently in. The clever part is that the board is made up of square tiles, and each turn you push the 1 extra tile in to the board wherever you like (from the side), sliding that entire row along and changing the layout. This happens every turn and makes the board very dynamic. It's very basic but it was good fun, and I'd recommend it for playing with people who are resistive to some of the more co pet games.

Pandemic - this was brilliant. Initially confusing as there's a lot to set up and learn, but once we were in the swing of it, we were working together to try and sweep through the map and wipe out key outbreak areas. In the end we were one step off the game ending global outbreak and 3 cards from the game ending, but we managed to finish with eradicating the yellow virus. Black was constantly the biggest pain to get under control, and a few times we thought we had it only for an epidemic card to turn up and the whole thing would explode.

Played Dead of Winter with a few mates last weekend. We were all playing for the first time, took about an hour to set up and get familiar with the rules, then we won in like 3 rounds. Pretty sure we didn't play properly as it was way too easy :slol:

Got Coup for Christmas off a mate and tried to play with my family. They straight up refused to learn, scoffing that it was 'too complicated' and that 'its a bit long.' The instructions are 500 words long and each game lasts about 10 minutes.

Raging.

Still, popping round to a friend's to play Detective tomorrow.

Very similar experience here, yesterday! First ever game of Pandemic. Kept things under control, but eventually the board was getting swamped with viruses. We decided to go for broke on the cures and hope the outbreaks didn't finish us. We were maybe three turns from getting both of the last two cures, when an epidemic card did for us, triggering chain outbreaks and pushing the outbreak counter to the end. I'd say we were close to winning, but then I noticed that the outbreaks would have used up all the yellow cubes, and we'd have failed on that. And there were only four player cards left in the stack, so that would have ended us too! We never did fully eradicate any of the diseases, and I'm thinking how we can tune our strategy next time.

Brilliant game, and I'm itching to have another crack at it.

EDIT: And I'd probably have never got round to buying it, but DML on Twitter kept retweeting competition entries for a board game company, every day in December, and it nagged my mind into purchasing one.

Just played the escape room game my secret Santa got me along with forbidden desert.

The escape one is so clever, you have an app running at the same time which has puzzles and combinations on it, and the cards have numbers and hidden letters matching other cards, so you can combine items. We got stuck near what must be the end and the timer didn t end the game like it should have, so we'll try again tomorrow (the game is the same every time so once you've beaten it, I don't think you'd play again).

Forbidden desert is like pandemic crossed with labyrinth. Good fun and we came close to death a few times (it's a coop game). As we won the next game will be a notch higher in difficulty.

Love the forbidden series. Island, desert and sky. Real test is to win all three back to back as they are sort of connected and are spiritual sequels. Escape the island and crash in desert, escape the desert and find the floating city, escape that and I presume the next one will be forbidden planet! (Assuming they can work out the trademark issues lol)

We played Monikers on Christmas Day with all the family. Went down really well, but I did have to vet the cards beforehand! Older folks struggled with the simple rules of that - and it's just a spin on charades. So I knew not to bring anything more complicated to the table!

I find this infuriating, especially when you've purposefully chosen something for everyone to enjoy and they just switch off.

It was so frustrating. I tried to get a game of Cosmic Encounter going a few years back and it wasn't the fact it didn't work that annoyed me but the fact they refused to engage after the first 2 minutes and stubbornly refused to even listen to the rules.

The vast majority of card games and/or traditional board games are as complicated, if not more complicated, than the games I try to introduce but because they're new or different there's no chance of them even trying.

Also, my brother is one of those joyless arseholes who thinks board games are for kids and the elderly.

Flamme Rouge has become a family favourite in one sitting, in the same way Pandemic, Ticket to Ride and Codenames have before it.

Very close cycling game where a bit of luck and playing to gain small advantages over the field, along with getting your timing right to sprint for the line. Already thinking about putting a Grand Tour in place via the app.

Quick question (which I'm sure will have been covered somewhere in the thread before, but my not particularly extensive search proved fruitless) - what 2 player games would people recommend? I've just bought me and the wife Pandemic and she's been open to playing (we've had 2 games in the last week and despite missing a key rule making the game easier for ourselves) we've enjoyed it.

Just wondered what other titles people would recommend for 2 players and for relative board game novices?
