Just wondered what other titles people would recommend for 2 players and for relative board game novices?

Let’s guess the rule: Curing a virus means you can remove all of a city’s cubes of that colour as one action?

Star Wars Rebellion is great fun (if long). The Arkham Horror Card Game is a tough, but enjoyable challenge. Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is a fantastic mystery game that suits 2 players really well (as does its modern off-shoot, Detective: A Modern Crime Board game)

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective

This sounds good, I'll give it a look.

Chronicles of Crime as well. Uses app integration so you can explore a crime scene.

Nice thanks.

We played Nintendo monopoly over Christmas. strawberry floating rubbish. I tell you, after you've been playing things like pandemic, you realise just how gooseberry fool monopoly is.

Monopoly is 100% gooseberry fool. Slow, dull, luck based and largely skill free (even when played with the auction rule that everyone forgets)

Got Kingdomino and Azul for Christmas, both pretty simple and entertaining, with enough strategy for replay value. Good for starting off a games night.
The Mrs also picked up the Alhambra big box version for about €35 so currently going through all the expansions for that. Very good game but I'm going to have expansion fatigue

If you want a "Monopoly" style game to play with your family, try Machi Koro. It's about running a city and making money but it actually has choices and modern design sensibilities.

I saw "Poldark the Board Game" in Marks & Spencer over the weekend.

Might give this a punt later in the year. One of kids had the Mario Kart Monopoly for Christmas, tried to play it a couple of times and it's really not very good. Probably actually worse than real Monopoly. Counter to that though, we also got Harry Potter Cluedo and that was actually pretty good and maybe better than real Cluedo. Helped we actually read the rules, something I don't think I've ever done with Cluedo.

I got Azul for my family for Christmas. Everyone enjoyed it which is good. My family like board games but I have to be careful with the complexity and theme otherwise only my Dad and brother will ever play it. Shame really as I want to get things like Spirit Island, Gaia Project and Brass: Birmingham but we'd never get more than three playing.

My brother got Dominion as well for Christmas. Really enjoyed, especially after playing it a few times. Other deck building games I've played have been a one off event so I tend to do crap and never have a chance to learn from my mistakes. I think I'll grab Clank for my family as it mixes the deck building aspect and combines it with another family favourite: Dungeon Quest.

Dominion though. Creator has that nailed down. The price of all those expansions. :dread:

Just found out that our copy of Pandemic Legacy is a counterfeit :| I had no idea that pirated board games were even a thing!

The quality is surprisingly good for a rip off though and I'd have never known if I hadn't been reading online after finishing the game.

It didn't change the game at all but I feel a bit unwashed knowing I got duped.

Definitely picking up Season 2 asap. A legit copy though!

Yeah there were quite a few - I think they'll all completely playable, just the components are all slightly worse quality.

I double checked mine after a) I got it really cheap on Amazon and b) one of the dossiers was upside down.

All legit :datass:

And +1 for Machi Koro, its a very nice little game and has the rare distinction of being a board game my wife likes to play.

I feel the same way about Talisman, you roll a dice to move and then draw stuff from a deck of cards and...things just happen. Apart from choosing to move left or right around the board there is little skill involved.

I've got the board game bug after buying my lad Forbidden Island for Christmas and playing it to absolute death. We also had Carcassonne and Catan from a while back and have dusted those off and had great fun there too.

Wanted something a bit more complex to play in the evenings with the other half. We're both big fans of dungeon-crawlers (used to play Diablo 3 until the early hours) so it was a pretty easy decision to settle on Descent: Journeys In The Dark. Picked up from Zatu Games, who I can highly recommend.

Haven't had a game yet as it's taken quite some time to familiarise ourselves with the rules, but I think we're about there. Will update with progress. Excited! :toot:

Yeah it's awesome. Had considered picking up one of the other ones in the series but was a bit worried they'd be too similar. Has anyone had any experience playing Desert or Sky?

Yes and they are both excellent. At their core they play the same but each feels unique from its theme and mechanics. They are also sequels so you can play them in a row..
