Headshots are a thing in Halo - shooting someone in the head will take them down quicker. For some weapons this can make a huge difference. Battle rifle to the head will kill someone very quickly for example

Shield management is hugely important - you have a shield which recharges after a few seconds whilst you are not taking damage. It can take quite a few hits before you go down, so you want to try and maximise your shield level before any engagement - chances are if people are taking you down quick it's because you are low on shields!

That was the other problem - I couldn't see anyone but would routinely get shot and by then it's too late. The level with the arch, there was something like 6 of us in that tiny map and I couldn't see anyone, and then out of nowhere I'm dead.

It can be brutal at times for sure!

Part of it is about learning the map layouts and routes - you want to find ways of getting around that mix between high traffic areas where you can try and get kills and quieter/more covered spots where you can reload, recharge shields etc. ready for the next encounter.

Sometimes there just isn't much you can do if you spawn in a bad place or someone else gets the drop on you. Best bet then is just to see how much damage you can do and throw some death grenades to see if you can steal a cheeky kill from beyond the grave!

I maintain from these four weeks of Halo 1/2 that Halo is a first person shooter that does its best to marginalise gunplay in favour of the other mechanics. Possibly because it was designed for controllers?

All the guns seem to be a bit nerfed, while every melee attack is a Kung Fu death punch. It sometimes felt a bit like I was playing Cricket Through the Ages against Aaron

I don't think any of the guns I've used in the Halo series are in the pantheon of all time greats. The only possible inductee would be the Halo 1 pistol, and they nerfed it in Halo 2!

The map routes and spawn luck Jenuall mentions are as true of Quake as it is of Halo so I don't think it makes much of a difference to our experience. Maybe the skill of timing your runs into traffic between shield recharges is a different skill to skating across pickups that has no analogue in "true" retro shooters.

This sounds like a hatchet job against Halo and I don't intend that because it's clearly loved by many people and I did enjoy playing it. I just think as a pure FPS experience it's lacking compared to other things we've played.

Going back to this, I definitely feel like Halo skews more "modern" in it's presentation and gameplay. Regenerating health, 2 weapon limit, etc. Between it and Half-Life they killed the traditional style FPS for a good while.

With Halo I think the hit-scan weapons are really where the best chance for kills is. Especially the Battle Rifle when it's zoomed (You all knew about the "zoom" button yeah? :slol: ). Got so many kills from far away with that, which encourages keeping your distance and peppering whatever targets appear. More often than not you can get some quick kills with it, especially if you can get headshots. I know I got quite a few people with it and it's the gun I looked for every round. Pair that with something explosive, or the Energy Sword and it's a bit of a beast.

Definitely prefer the fast, Quake style of shooter though. Which is good because Daikatana is REALLY fast.
There are some quirks to the game that I'll need to go over, but I'll try and get it all written up for tonight at some point.

Civvie 11 has another round up of stuff he's been playing.

I can attest that Wizordum is damn good. Been playing that for the past few months and I really recommend it.
I also played the Demo for Mullet Mad Jack during the Steam Nextfest and loved it. It's just literally non-stop. Really thrilling and it feels like it what a 90's FPS arcade game could have been like, especially if some of the Japanese devs had made them.
Bears in Space looks great as well. Like if Ratchet and Clank had a first person mode.
Some mad stuff later on as well.

John Romero's Daikatana

Image

It's time for the most bad-ass, most blood-pumpin FPS of all time as John Romero's Daikatana blasts Retro Shooter nights back onto PC.
Who among you will be made bitches? Who will suck it down?

Join us for the next two Wednesdays and find out if the game really does live up to it's reputation.

What you will need to play this week:

Daikatana - Steam or GoG version

GoG Installer
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fGFVgCKbqOOKfM9-4obuMfJ3WXaZHVo8/view?usp=drive_link

1.3 Community Patch
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hrDYuXhqsHs2RI6An1A2vzjew_A908ZP/view?usp=drive_link

Additional Files (Required)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r3XGmB582-ksciGzx9KzlcStH1BJSR3t/view?usp=drive_link

Basic Setup
=========

1. Download and install Daikatana using your preferred method. Any up-to-date version should work (GoG, Steam etc). I've provided the GoG version above.
2. Download the Community 1.3 Patch
3. Run the 1.3 patch installer and point it at your Daikatana install directory (E.g C:\Games\Daikatana)
4. Extract Additional Files (fixed).zip to a convenient location.
5. Copy the extracted files into your Daikatana folder. It may prompt you to overwrite. If it does just accept.

There we go, a fully upgraded Daikatana installation. It now supports modern resolutions as well as a new master server. It also has a load of other customisation options for you to explore.

Joining the Server
==============

1. From the Daikatana main screen choose "Multiplayer" from the list on the right.
2. You can set up your character here. When ready click on the "Find an Internet game" button
3. The list of servers should refresh quickly (There were only 10 or so when I've been testing). Double click on "GR-Daikatana" to join the match! (No passwords as I can't figure out how you enter it, I think we'll be fine though.)

Gameplay Considerations
==================

There are a few things that I've picked up on while getting the game set up that make it a little bit different from other FPS games of the time.

1 - Different episodes have different weapon sets. This carries over to DM as well. So if a map is for a specific episode, it will use the weapons from that episode.
2 - There is a light skill system in the multiplayer. The character you choose has unique attributes. As you score kills you accumulate points that you can spend on different attributes. So you can become more powerful as the round progresses. It resets back to your characters starting stats each round.

I found this explanation here: http://www.daikatananews.net/skillsystem.html

Skill System

At the beginning you should first bind these commands to keys:
show_huds // toggle the status/skill bar
scoreboard // toggle the scoreboard
hud_prev // Goes to the previous skill
hud_next // Goes to the next skill
hud_use // Select the skill
Simply open the "current.cfg" file in the \Data folder of your Daikatana Installation or use the mainmenu option "Keyboard" for binding these keys.

How to use the skill system!

When you frag in Daikatana you will gain skill points, and when you have frag enough your skill bar will popup and the POWER will start flashing. You can now upgrade your player. This is done by:

Press hud_next to move to the skill you want to upgrade.
Press hud_use to upgrade the skill.

Mikiko, Hiro and Superfly
Mikiko, Hiro and Superfly have different skills in the beginning of a multiplayer game, so choose the player which fits best to your game style.

Mikiko starts with 1 ATTACK and 1 SPEED.
Hiro starts with 1 ATTACK and 1 ACRO.
Superfly starts with 1 POWER and 1 VITALITY.

Stuck on step 6 at the moment - been waiting for the installer to do something for 20 minutes now.

Looks like setup.exe has made me its bitch!

Yeah it's a weird one. I'll see if I can get the maps extracted without it, but I ran fine (Eventually) on both my systems.

EDIT: I've repackaged the additional files archive with the map-pack files already extracted.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r3XGmB582-ksciGzx9KzlcStH1BJSR3t/view?usp=drive_link

All you need to do is extract the archive and copy the whole lot into your Daikatana directory. It'll overwrite some stuff but that's expected.

Thanks Dev, all working fine here! Even joined a random's server and had a couple of comical one on ones with someone who also seemed rather... new at this shall we say.

EDIT: may be 30 mins late again due to volunteering!

Big thanks as always Cheeky for clear instructions + supplied files!

I ended up grabbing the Steam key dirt cheap from IndieGala, all set up now :) The 1.3 patch is superb, very impressively exhaustive with options
