Currently playing around in Quake 2 64. After my disappointment with the actual Quake 2 campaign (compared with Quake 1 in general) I think I'm liking this more, with the snappier levels and subdued music. Fun!

Romero talks a bit about the expansion packs in his book.

The team that made Scourge was made up of 3 guys from 3D Realms that had just finished on Duke 3D who wanted to start their own company. So Romero hired them to do the expansion pack. They became Ritual Entertainment who went on to make Sin and Star Trek: Elite Force among other not too notable games.

Personally I've never really touched ANY of the Quake/Quake 2 add-ons. Not sure why.

Speaking of weird ports of Quake/Doom I recently found PSYDoom which is a PC source port that lets you play the PS1 version of the game with all the modern bells and whistles. Hi-res, mouse and keyboard control all with the coloured lighting and music that made the PS1 version stand out. It's still using the cut down Jaguar levels for the Doom 1 maps though, but that's just the nature of PS1 Doom.

Interesting about Scourge!

Btw if it'll make you treat it as a 'new' game and give it a go or something, just pretend Dimension Of The Machine is a new boomer shooter and play it! So so good and takes you (and Quake) to places I didn't think it would.

Also forgot to mention I also recently played the Quake 'Honey' add-on from 2021. Short and sweet and worth it for anyone fancying some Quake.

I will look into getting another 'Boomer Shooter' (and will likely do so on Switch because I love the control feel of the joy-cons). I've always fancied trying Dusk but it looks like lots of other ones have since come to add to to the choice.

Boltgun is a great modern retro-style one. It's dripping in 90's Warhammer 40k style and its glorious.

Switch and the other consoles are pretty well stocked with a good mix of old and new games that really scratch that itch. I've got Rise Of The Triad permanently installed on my Deck because it's so perfect for quick 5-10 minute blasts of carnage. Though being able to map motion control to help with fine aiming is really useful, especially for the older games that really aren't designed with pads in mind. I know some of them do that on Switch.

Finally started the MachineGames levels in the Quake remaster and they really are excellent. Much better than the original Quake expansions in every way!

I could never get on with Kingpin. Even at the time it was an exceptionally ugly game.

I only ever played a demo of Kingpin, was never really sure what to make of it in all honesty!

Definitely some interesting stuff on display there. I was looking forward to Ion Fury but isn't that the one that had dodgy Devs involved?

More of an immersive sim than a straight shooter, but Core Decay looks really cool:

Yeah I really fancy the look of that. Really nabbed that Deus Ex aesthetic. Looks pretty sweet.

I finally finished my first original Quake map last week. Ended up moving away from Singleplayer and focussing on a multiplayer map. SP stuff can take a long time to do well and I really wanted to get a map done from start to finish. Deathmatch maps seemed like a good way to do that.

Called it "Manse of the Apprentice" and I initially started with the concept of a courtyard where the floor has crumbled to reveal a dark, temple beneath.
Took me a week or two on and off to finish, but I'm pretty happy with it. It's probably not my final version, there are plenty of things I'm not happy with, or that are just poorly balanced, so chances are I'll revisit it at some point. But it's functional, it works with the built-in bots for the remastered edition and I'm quite happy with how it turned out. I've linked it below if anyone wants to try it out. The text file in the archive will explain what to do to install it.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Mh6VdgatwMkLPU7sCrI4bpJy46UMiJq8/view?usp=drive_link

Which of course brings me to the next thing I'd like to talk about.

Multiplayer!

One of the biggest, most defining features of classic shooters was their deathmatch modes. So I'd like to try and bring that back a little.
Would anyone be interested in a regular night where we play older shooters? Say one week we do Quake, next maybe Unreal Tournament 99 or Half-Life etc.
A lot of these are cross-play as well so having console players alongside PC players would be very doable.

Sweet.

I'm gonna mess around with Quake for a bit first, see what we can do with that.
But there's so many classics we could look at. Even stuff like Jedi Knight or Elite Force.

Yeah definitely one to add to the slate. I'll need to see what the best way to do Outcast/Academy online is so let me look into it. :D

If anyone has the disc version of Elite Force, I used this website to get it running on W10 with a graphics upgrade:

Nice find Dowbocop.

I've got the GOG version, which I think has the DLC as well, but I might be wrong. Elite Force is definitely one I'd like to look at as well.

I've had a quick look and my steam version of Jedi Outcast MP doesn't seem to want to work straight away so I'll have a poke around to see what the best solution is for that.

In the meantime I'm gonna jump on Quake Remastered and try out some of the multiplayer with bots.

If anyone would like to join me the room code is CYLX

I'll be doing normal levels but I will be trying out my custom map too, which can be found here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Mh6Vdg ... drive_link

The text file inside has the instructions for installing it. I don't think there's anyway for console players to access it though, but worth a try just joining the game.
If anyone wants to chat I'll be on the GRcade discord as well. Just give me a shout and we can jump into a voice channel.

Well managed to get some decent games in with Jenuall and a couple of bots.

Ended up having a great time, so it would be nice to get some more people. I do need to figure out how to get a map rotation working, but there is a lobby system that's functional.

So if everyone is up for it I'd like to propose a mid-week game, say Wednesday night at 8? Would do this weekend but got stuff that means I can't guarantee I'll be about.

Either way if anyone is ever up for a random game just shout in the thread and I'll jump on if I'm free.
