Hello all, this post is about cross play capabilities regarding the Master Chief Collection though Steam and Xbox.

Know that if you purchase either Halo: Reach or the MCC through the Steam store YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO PLAY WITH FRIENDS ON XBOX. To circumvent this issue, you must buy Halo: Reach or the MCC on the Microsoft Game Store.

Additionally, if you decide to purchase Halo: Reach or the MCC through the Microsoft Store, you will still be able to play with friends that have it on Steam and on Xbox.

So objectively speaking, the best way to play the Halo: Reach or the MCC will be through the Microsoft Store since it allows you to play with Steam and Xbox users.

In regards to Steam's Policy on refunds, if you are reading this and ineligible for a refund as I am all you can do is have regret and be sad.

EDIT: Since everyone seems to not understand in these comments that the Xbox platform mentioned above and the Microsoft Store are two separate entities I will clarify for those not understanding clearly.

Playing on an Xbox One with the MCC will not allow you to play with those on PC that bought it through Steam. However, if you own a PC and log into you Microsoft account, you can play the MCC through the Microsoft Store with your Steam friends and them with you.

Apologies to the angry neck-beards who are not familiar with how the Xbox game front antd platform works.

I own the steam version and have done since it released (and I cancelled my gamepass sub this month too) so I guess I'll be skipping out on this too.

Just checked and I can see my wifes XBL account in the steam version of MCC, but I can't get it to join my roster just now.
Seems like it should be doable though. I'll tinker more later but you should be able to use it I think.

This might be the first thing that I have to abandon the old Steam Deck for, I've got Game Pass but last time I checked there wasn't a reliable way to get GP games running on the Deck.

I'll get it downloaded on my main PC for a change!

Just managed to set up a game on my One X and join it via my Steam copy.

Gamepass will be easiest, but as long as Steam players let us know their Xbox live name, we can invite them to the game.

Just checked and we are both Xbox friends, so that should hopefully be easy. I may have another Steam buddy joining, I recently did a Halo 1 co op campaign with him.

Ah I'm not too fussed about exclusively playing via the deck - I could stream the Game Pass version as well but I never have too much success with streaming sadly (the exception being PS5 streaming which seems to work really well compared to anything else I've tried!)

I'm downloading the MCC version to my desktop now - glad I set the download off early as it seems to be exceptionally slow, I started it first thing this morning and it's only on 30%!

My initial steam download wasn't too huge, but I've installed it before so I think it defaulted to the components I had installed previously, which was just Reach.

But yeah you need to download the Master Chief Collection. Go into it and make sure you have the Halo: Combat Evolved Multiplayer downloaded at the bare minimum.
