I picked up Ion Fury a little while back and gave that a go which was cool, I have quite a few of these on Switch now actually  Doom’s, Duke Nukem and Quake to name some of them.

I quite liked what I played of Ion Fury. I will say that while I enjoyed Duke 3D back in the day, I was never a massive fan of the Build engine games. Not compared to the other 3D shooters at the time at least. Duke had the humour and a different level design ethos (Realistic locations instead of the more abstract levels of Quake for example) which really worked for it. But I always found myself going back to Quake.

But Ion Fury is definitely on my list to get back to at some point.

One thing I love is seeing all these old classics like Doom, Quake etc still standing up to scrutiny compared to newer games. Doom especially is as good today as it was back in 1994. I'm still not sure there's any newer games I'd pick over it.

40K Boltgun is excellent. I really enjoyed getting all the achievements on it last month.

Also really enjoyed Metal Hellsinger which is a lot like modern Doom except it's a rhythm action game where you score more for shooting on the beat. With artists like Serj Tankian performing vocals, it's really great.

I recently picked up Prodeus for Switch. I'd seen a few online pals playing it and, although I've only tried the opening level so far, it seems to be good fun. The Switch version has a very pixelated - and messy! - graphic styling but I really like this; it has a very visceral effect.

Good call, Dev. These style of games are still super-playable and Doom feels just as good playing it today; slick and fun.

I do quite like the look of that. Think I installed it on my Xbox but never got round to playing it. Need to check it out.

Yeah they really nailed a lot of the genre quite early on didn't they.

Again I've enjoyed what I played of Prodeus as well.

Picked up Turbo Overkill this morning, but not had a chance to play it yet. Probably later on I think.

So much to shoot, so little time. :slol: :fp:

I really enjoyed playing through Project Warlock last year so I recommend that. I think a sequel is coming soon too.

I have a fair few Boomer Shooters installed on my Series X:

PowerSlave Exhumed
Ziggurat 2
Project Warlock
Ion Fury
Prodeus
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Doom 64
Quake 1&2
XIII
Severed Steel
Duke Nukem 3D World Tour
Turok 1&2
Halo MCC - Reach, Halo CE, Halo 2, ODST, Halo 3 & Halo 4.

I've also got Metroid Prime on my Switch.

They are all brilliant in their own way, it takes time to get setting right for each one to run well on a controller but I love them all. FPS is my favourite type of game by a mile. I regularly play The Bioshock Trilogy but not sure that counts.

Loved Duke Nukem 3D back in the day (still do really). As said, the original doom is as good today as it ever was.

Yep, it's better than most modern shooters.

No idea what a 'boomer shooter' is, but I did enjoy playing through Doom earlier this year, having only previously ever played the shareware version. At some point I'll get into Doom 2, and I have Quake I and II in my Steam library. I used to love Rise of the Triad back in the DOS days, and although I'm not sure it'll hold up as well as the likes of Doom or Quake, I think the nostalgia alone will be enough to keep me entertained.

I think the general concensus is that it's an FPS where the focus is very clearly on fast, chunky violence. Usually based around older FPS tropes like non-regenerating health, large numbers of monsters, keys etc.
Not generally big on narrative or interactivity unless it's in service of screaming around levels blasting enemies into icky little piles.

So Serious Sam would probably be one, but System Shock 2 wouldn't. Halo wouldn't be one, nor would CoD or any of the more narrative, set-piece driven shooters that took over from the late 90's/early 2000's.

I don't even understand the term 'boomer shooter'. It's just classic FPS to me.

I just try and associate it with big boomy guns. Evil Dead did popularise the term boomstick for shotguns so it's not a massive stretch.

I always shoot my boomer whenever I can get a quiet 15 minutes to myself.
