File this under "rumour" for now, but if it's not true then it's a particularly poor joke.

At the KTCS9 20th Anniversary evening tonight, Robert announced to a small crowd that a brand new, 1 hour Red Dwarf episode had been commissioned by BBC Worldwide, to be filmed in October 2008.

He wouldn't spoil the storyline, but did mention that the script is being finalised right now.

I was in the audience, it was a good night, with not too many people, and plenty of chances for questions.

It was recorded by KTCS9 for a future DVD.

Thanks Robert, I enjoyed the evening and your Kochanski walk.

Steve (The British, Australian Canadian).

So then, let the feverish speculation begin. A conclusion to the final (mediocre) cliffhanger episode? Or a retconned finale to the show? Will Rob Grant be involved?

This news has got me tongue tied.

EDIT: I do seek closure on that cliffhanger finale. Everyone died except Rimmer, right?

Possibly my favourite show.

Also, I fear the worst. This has the potential to be awful. Some episodes in series 7 and 8 were.

The key is bringing Rob Grant back.

I'll hold my breath till something more concrete comes out.

The movie has supposedly been in production for the past eight years.

Still, hopefully it'll be true and we'll see something soon.

Used to love Red Dwarf back in the day, if the new show is up to the quality of episodes like Back to Reality, Backwards, Better than life and Rimmerworld, it should be ace.

While Red Dwarf has been one of my favourite TV programmes for as long as I can remember, I'm not sure what I'd make of a new one. Some closure would be nice I guess, but then, I like to think they were all killed at the end of Series 6 such was the monstrosity of Series 7. Series 8 wasn't too bad I guess, with some good Lister/Rimmer moments. And it had Norman Lovett, which is instawin.

As good news as this is, the complete shittiness of the last couple of series means I'm not exactly hopeful of a good send-off to the show.

Season 7 felt really flat. The first season without Rob Grant and it showed in the script. They brought in Kochanski who adversely affected the chemistry of the gang. Also if I recall correctly, Rimmer was only in a few episodes.

Season 8 started to hit its stride a little bit more. Some nice Rimmer/Lister dialogues when they were incarcerated for example.

There's a possibility that Rob Grant will be involved, the recent dvd release (the Bodysnatcher collection, comprises series 1-4 with a load of new bits) has input from Grant, could suggest that he and Naylor have put the past behind them. Here's hoping anyway.

Actually I quite liked the episode Tikka To Ride in series 7. The rest of the series was considerably worse though. Anyone remember Ouroboros? Eurgh.

Also the stupid crying noise Kryten made in that series drove me up the wall. :x
