Sorry my internet was down yesterday so could only get on when out. How many games have we played? I'm so lost with where I am and who I'm supposed to be playing

Think it’s one but I honestly can’t remember whether I was black or white.

I'm playing all 3 of my opponents now. Game one with Cora almost Over. Game 1 with Pancake starting to approach midgame, but he's already gaining upper hand. Game 1 with Cuttooth very early.

Very tight game. Think I have a bit more space to work with but how to use it! Don't think it's going to be finished any time soon.

1-0 hypes. Good game. Very tight until I castled queenside like a fool.

Ah, I'm playing you! Think you were doing ok until that queen move that let me develop my rooks.
Think I'm in trouble in this game, have made a mess of the start

Well played. I really ballsed that up there but you took advantage perfectly. Much to ponder for me!

You too, was a tough one. Think your mistakes were taking that pawn with your Knight and then moving your King for seemingly no reason. I very nearly took your Bishop then, only just remembering about your Rook before I confirmed!

I probably should have taken you up on your queen exchange offer as well. And giving that extra pointless check with my rook really did me no good at all.

I was thinking about castling after reading a book on chess that I had, and I was wondering: what's the consensus on castling then shifting the second pawn up one to allow the King to move up a rank directly behind it? Is this a good way of avoiding back rank checks (although making you more vulnerable to diagonals) or is this a bad idea?

Well every position is different but I would say that's a bad idea in many cases, especially if the queen and bishops are still on the board, you're just inviting them into your inner sanctum! You would be quite susceptible to pawn pushes on the flank as well. There are definitely situations when it could work, and GMs are always doing weird things like this but they have such a good understanding of king safety that they can make it work. For the mere mortals like us, I would not recommend making this type of manoeuvre systematically. Fianchettoing a bishop is good though, and will also protect against accidental back rank mates.

Just beat Curls in our first game, it was highly competitive. Probably the hardest game I've had so far after the two with Tomous.

Generally a bad idea unless you have to (to avoid checkmate etc) because your King is open to diagonal attacks from the Queen/Bishops. An escape route is a good idea though, I always look to move the pawn on the A or H file (depending which side I've castled) forward one space. This protects from checkmate on the back rank and has the added bonus of protecting from knights moving into aggressive positions on the 4th/6th rank.

Agreed, have to be careful of those crafty bishop sacrifices though. Sometimes an advanced a or h pawn can be a massive liability (had a situation like this in the game with Curls).

Was just about to say. The queen pin in front of my king with the bishop attacking was what did me. I KNEW i had to defend it, but didn't really know the best technique. Bishop exchange wasn't the best option in the end. I was not expecting you to push the F pawn forward, that really had me thinking and going 'this guy smart'.

Still find it funny that the 'best' move I made was a thumb slip. Thanks Chess.com. To be fair though, sacrficing that rook actually stopped you getting a queen or checkmate a few moves down. We exchanged queens anyway mind you. Best way to end a game when a rook up really, exchange queens.

It was an insult to you to keep playing when a rook up, as you were too good to make a mistake and lose anything. I realised that after moving my knight around a bit. A good game though.

I've started this game with an opening I'm still trying to get to grasps with. So it may well be over a lot quicker xD

I was sure there must be a more forcing way to win but I just couldn't see it so settled for the queen trade as it seemed good enough, I appreciate the resignation, we could have been grinding for another 30 moves but in a daily game I don't think I would have messed it up. That rookove to avoid mate / losing the queen was absolutely inspired, even if it was a slip.

Sicilian can be a fun opening, looking forward to the game!
