Primary school league tables.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-46541454

Education is free so income has nothing to do with whether or not you pay attention in class - its the attitude that matters. Maybe poorer families just dont see the importance of education (hence why they are poor)!

One of the schools with the worst results in my town is the one where the mothers sit in the pub and let their kids run around in the restaurant as if it was a creche. Must be the school's fault.

Not surprised, parents who have their heads in a mobile phone rather than talking to their siblings and encouraging them to talk about everyday things at what happened at School etc

Overlap that Map with the areas of England that voted leave....

You might start to figure out why people did.

Whether we like the following fact or not it is true.

My daughters class size has risen from 29 to 34.

3 of the 5 increased intake did not speak English as a first language and needed support.

How does this help the class and the teacher?

Ps - I am not relating this to Brexit but to education.

Results are meaningless. Where's the graph regarding respect? Respect for your parents, respect for elders, respect for teachers. Kids aren't anybody's priority today. Parents too busy (working to make ends meet). Kids left to their own devices. Internet corruption rife. Discipline outlawed. Kids aren't stupid, they've just moved on to something else. The rich ones just still have a firewall.

Successful parents and parenting tends to lead to successful kids. Its not a conspiracy and its nothing to be ashamed of.
"The law of the jungle, survival of the fittest " are all very accurate descriptions for this evolutionary trait but that doesnt seem to go down too well in these glorious PC times of ours where everybody wins, everybody gets a degree and everybody loves them

Education at primary school level is free so what does poverty have to do with it? You can't force people to be clever when they're not.

Wait, you mean chavs are thick?

Bring back the belt...

Instead of paying £39 billion to the EU why not invest 10 percent of it in education.
Investing wisely in our children's future makes common sense something that the political class don't seem to have much of.

Personally I have self tutored 2 children into grammar school.

where I grew up there was no choice of grammar and because I chose to study I got lots of stick for it in my local comp. I would have loved to have had a choice.
No choice of private either as we were poor.

Why is it I can be an example of social mobility yet others can't?

My parents encouraged and supported me.

When’s the last time you heard of a teacher being sacked???

There is simply no excuse for poor teachers in this day and age and it’s high time we started sacking the slackers. There are plenty of others more than willing to fill their boots!!

Perhaps the poorer children could try a bit harder, you know, they play their part instead of sitting back on their lazy arses and expecting the schools to work magic?

I often notice that "poor" parents can afford tattoos and the latest 'phone ...

Walking through my kids playground you no longer hear English being spoken, how has this been allowed to happen?

Well at least the majority of the selected comments aren't completely blaming the teachers.....

*cue Moggy adding plenty that do blame teachers*

I would love to know who are these people queuing up to teach though... I know I'd be no good as one because I'd be smacking the kids back all the time

Usually there would be, but this was too good an opportunity for them to bash poor people and immigrants.

To suggest that having another vote enhances democracy is absurd.
The 2016 referendum was billed as the final say on this matter. It should be accepted as this. A good deal would have been possible had everyone supported the PM but she was undermined at every turn by indivuduals who are in effect traitors; if one looks at the strict definition.
My other points are as sound and rational and true.

You may disagree and seek solace by referring to the 'group speak) of the so called 'experts' (most of whom are in receipt of EU funding) and so good luck with that.
If there is a second vote I believe the effect will be catastrophic for parliamentary credibility and the rule of law.

All these points and not one swear word. Wow I must be of an older and WISER generation. You should listen. You might learn something.

Severn Bridge tolls removed.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-46539184

Great! That's all we need - even more English immigration. I see the subtle and not-so-subtle attempts to remind us that we're an UK all the time now. Obviously a Brexit backlash. Just wait - we will be firmly under that thumb called Westminster if we let them have their way. Hopefully, Scotland will vote out and then Wales. I've even read that Ireland could well unite someday. Silver linings...

Taxpayers subsidising the drivers, again.

Hardly a surprise to see the BBC pushing this cheap, voting buying publicity stunt for all its worth. Is it 3, 4 or more of these Severn bridge stories that have been opened for comment over the last few weeks.

Still, the BBC are the last refuge of the scoundrel that resides in Westminster, clearly a need to keep in the good books of the Tories lest they threaten that Royal Charter once again.

Great news isn’t it. Increase the free flow of traffic over the bridges, piling more pressure on the already overcrowded roads.

Meanwhile starve the rail infrastructure of investestment, ensuring gridlock on the roads becomes the norm.

More traffic, more roads, more traffic, more roads.

Less rail, more passengers, less rail, more passengers.

The whole transport network is a mess.

Make no mistake, this decision was born out of political cowardice. The Welsh have only to find the burial place of King Arthur plus his descendants and bob's your aunty, Independence.

It's not the Toll on the Seven Crossing that stops GP's Teachers and other professionals coming to work in Wales.

It's the insistence on Welsh Language, and in particularly Welsh medium schools.

What professional person would subject their children to such a ridiculous and unwanted injustice on their future prospects.

What Is The Point In Speaking A Laungage. That Doesn,t Serve Any Purpose .we all speak english which is spoken around the world. yakki da.

And here come the English in droves like the migrants accross the mediterranean. Next up; spend Welsh tax payers money to build a new road for Bristolians.

Where's trump when you need him to build some walls?

Now its FREE to get into Wales!!

But with Cardiff's Clown Government

who wants to go there

for more than a holiday?

If the Brynglas tunnels were situated in the USA or China doubt they would be much of an issue, there they would just dig some more tunnels or put some massive flyover in vicinity. Ironic that one of the world's greatest engineers, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was British. Bet he would have found the will and a way.

Dumping the tolls just before Brexit....are they trying to curry favour with all those Irish lorry drivers, who will now find it much cheaper getting to and fro from Dover?

Don't destroy the booths they can be utilised in Northern Ireland

The Brynglas tunnels are a proper nightmare though - the motorway goes from 3 to 2 lanes, and people seem incapable of using all 3 to drive normally and then filter in, so you end up with 2 rows of static traffic that back all the way up to the tolls, and the inner lane empty save for people darting in an out of it to shortcut the stationary traffic. Whoever decided 2 lanes was the way to go for that bit is a strawberry floating cretin.

Agreed, the M4 at Newport is bloody awful, the sooner the Welsh assembly approve the proposed southern bypass the better.

There have been proposals to do something about it for like 20 years, I think we'll still be moaning about the problems around Newport for many years to come sadly!

To be fair on the 2 lane part it wasn't that bizarre when it was designed and built over 50 years ago.

Safety campaigners say cuts to the number of lollipop men and women near schools are "jeopardising lives".

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-46514670

Surely schools could ask a few of their over paid under worked teaching staff to cover these crossings. Unfortunately teaching staff wont do a single thing for their pupils unless there is a significant percentage uplift in pay

Teachers today do NOT give a fig about their pupils.

Why don’t school heads ask for volunteers from their teaching staff to fulfil this role. There isn’t a single teacher who would fulfil this role on a rota unless there was a significant % uplift on their pay

Lollipop 'men'
Lollipop 'women'

Careful now BBC ! the Guardian will pick you up on that.

"What about lollipop LGBTQ++ ??"

Grrrr.....that'll be the pesky white western patriarchy again!

Because of Brexit ?

Surely the BBC can find a way to link this to Brexit ; )

Why not just ask for volunteers and pay for their kit?

In my area they have one who is outside the school that has a pelican crossing outside it. Just to make it a complete waste of money, the lollipop man stands there and presses the button! Then once the traffic stops, he has the audacity to walk into the middle and hold up his lollipop! THE TRAFFIC HAS ALREADY STOPPED I yell from inside my car (with windows up of course, don't want him to hear me!)

Do they have any luck getting cyclists to stop?

Doublethink and newspeak!

Call them lollipop ladies and lollipop men for goodness sake.

Moggy's note: the whole article (including the title) refers to them as lollipop men and lollipop ladies

What's the point when most kids these days are either chauffeured to the front gates or chaperoned. The older teens should be able to cross a road all by themselves, if they are too busy stuck on their phones to be bothered looking left and right then that's what's called natural selection.

I taught my kid to use his brain and taught the dangers of the road using graphic videos of road accidents.

I don't think teaching small children to cross the road safely counts as "wrapping them in cotton wool".

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Sorry, sorry, I'm clearly too soft.

I'll immediately start the nightly regime of showing my kids graphic car accident videos, but they may already be too far gone to re-educate now.

Oh well, if they get killed in a car crash then it's obviously just natural selection in action!

Of course it is natural selection, how else do you think we evolved?

And car crash videos are not enough, take them to the morgue to see the actual corpses. They'll thank you for it when they are older!

True, car accidents have been shaping the course of evolution for centuries. In fact the latest theory is that it was a giant car crash that wiped out the dinosaurs back in the day!

I took my kids to the morgue but it was just filled with the corpses of deceased lollipop people who had failed to survive when their livelihood was ruthlessly taken from them. Sad!
