Unfun fact: Most TLAs are in fact TLIs.

The project Im working on has changed names 5 times, mostly because theyll come up with a new name, people shorten it to its initials and then realise its the same initialism used for another product and now everyone is confused again.

I'm now officially a team leader at work.

It doesn't seem like much, but this is the first time since leaving the army I've gotten off the bottom rung of a paid job. Or even held down a paid job long enough to do so.

It's also the first time I've felt I have an actual career with opportunities for progression since the army. It may "only" be a contact centre, but it's the contact centre for one of the biggest motor dealership groups in the UK, and there are plenty of opportunities for moving around the business.

So the MD has agreed to make a new role for me, and my manager is ok with, so I start fully on Monday. I was starting to feel like I was handling it badly since I never brought up wage since this whole process has been very informal so there's never felt like an appropriate time. Last night my new manager was chatting with me and basically confirmed there will be a pay rise and we'll go through the details next week or so. Pretty damn happy, this is the first opportunity that's come up at the company I've been interested in, and it basically exists because I've done such a good job.

Update on the apprenticeship; Got through to the next part which was a game based aptitude test. Feel like I did well and the vague results I was given show I did better than average. (The results only showed <30th percentile, 30-50 and >50) Now to wait to hear back if I can get the phone interview.

Not sure if this should go here or in the travel thread. But I'm considering going to Japan for a week at the end of March...without telling my work. I can work from home most days so it shouldn't be a problem but I've never worked from outside the country. We use a VPN to connect to the intranet at work and I'm not sure if it will set off alarm bells for the IT people. Is that something that gets monitored normally?

It wouldn't be a full week actually, I would probably leave on the Friday and get back on Tuesday or something.

They probably won't notice, and if they did I can't see why they would care enough to dob you in.

At the same time, it would probably be better to let your boss know you're working from out of the country for a few days, so he knows he can't call you in if there's an emergency or whatever.

Looking at the calendar, I think I might just put this off a bit and take the vacation around the Easter long weekend, that way I would have 4 days off work, and would only need to take an additional day or two myself. I think that's probably better than doing something risky like what I was thinking at first.

I've finally got my self a mobile dev job and have handed in my notice the my current retail job, which I utterly loathe. One of the best days of my life. :toot:

It's with a great company I've had my eye on for a while, and was the first thing I applied for so I feel incredibly lucky. Especially because I don't have a degree. Also the pay is miles above what I going to ask for. So glad I'm finally going into a career I actually want to do, and can leave retail drudgery behind forever.
