Thanks everyone  - its a bit unsettling and the first time I have really experienced anything quite like it.

Drumstick wrote:Sorry to hear that mate. What are the chances of you being safe from the chop?

The people in our department should be safe, although the entire management structure is changing, so the department is effectively being broken into 3 and where my team sits just now is getting siphoned off completely into its own vertical*

If anything It might present more opportunities, but there have been quite a few of the less technical and more sales orientated folks chopped already.

Its strawberry floating brutal though how efficient the company is at removing folk. HR blocked booked rooms and people came into work normally - if they had a meeting scheduled they would subsequently be told after the meeting to leave their (work) things and then were escorted out of the building.

Its the equivalent of having the meeting-room covered with a plastic sheets and shooting the poor bugger in the head, then hosing it down for the next person.

As far as I understand in a lot of tech/IT/financial roles they make you go immediately to stop you strawberry floating with things while you still have access to sensitive stuff as revenge for being fired.

yep, they sign what was in the brown envelope and bye bye.

some people are put on "at risk" but the vast majority are gone there and then.

For me twice its been the fun case of being sent home with nebulous bollocks about delays and desk availability and then told not to come back over email/agency.

That's called "having fun" or "being a human" but only for people who have souls.

Aw God, basically the only communication between professionals allowed in Brussels was 'networking'. Every night was a networking event with no enjoyment permitted, people looked at you weird if you directed conversations away from work and politics. Was an absolute nightmare.

Congrats Drumstick!

In other news I'm moving over an hour away from my work tomorrow :dread:

However, I get to work from home most days :toot:

But those days I do have to commute :dread: :dread: :dread:

I actually managed to machine something today although I milled through my own cnc twice in the process.

Machines that can literally drill themselves to pieces when operated by a pleb should not be allowed.

Had a one to one meeting with my manager today. Just a standard "How're things going? Anything you need help with/want to do?" kind of meeting. Went well as I'm good at what I do and we both know it (I'm not usually one to brag about stuff as it comes off as arrogant, but when it comes to my job I know that I'm good at it). Long story short she want's me to go for the next technical adviser role when it opens up. Which means more money, more time off the phone, less of the "Why have I had a charge on my parcel" calls and more time spent problem solving the more technical queries that we have to deal with. Which would be fantastic as I love getting my teeth into something and understanding why things work they way the do. I'm a sucker for the details of things and it's helped me solve things for customers that other advisers have missed because I've actually dug into it a bit and found the root cause of an issue rather than fob them off with a quick fix.

Now we just need to convince the senior management that we need more Customs and Excise Technical Advisers in our office (There's currently four or five in the whole of the UK) and I'm hopefully a shoe-in. :D

Thats an interesting one. I myself am on the grad scheme for a telecoms company. I've done a few placements in various parts of the business but my current role and the one i'm hoping to stay in is a retail divisional support specialist / manager (former at present, get the title and a car if i go permanent)

I'm in IT and I'm either on the phone rammed with too much gooseberry fool to do or browsing the internet all day. :shifty:

The redundancies I was a part of at work have been pushed back a few months, however I've taken the opportunity get a better, higher grade, more analytical role within the company that I'm far more suited for. Should start within a couple of months depending on what's agreed between the two departments. :D

One of my team tried it on today. Responded to a request I sent basically saying no I'm busy, this guy will do it (and copied in the guy she referenced). I was like strawberry float off, you talk to me about this you do not copy in another member of the team. Thinks she's the boss .

I was an IT manager/digital designer for a year. Now I'm an IT managers for myself, digital designer/artist for myself. ;) I've also been a gallery technician, gallery volunteer, visual effects artist, security administrator and digital design conctactor.

As for today, banana splits who are banana splits, and don't even know it, mouthing off and estranging us nice people on days out, in a co-working space of all things. I thought I was away from all of that. :( Have straight up quit the co-working space because of it, I'm not spending £100 a month to subject myself to arseholes.
