Colleague's nephew may have died at sea Spearfishing yesterday (currently "missing")

So I have to step in this afternoon and run a course they were due to do. I've no real prep time and never seen the course.

Why does everything bad happen to me :(

I don't know, your colleague's nephew also seems to have had a bad day.

Despite being reasonable earlier, current boss is now getting funny about the argeed start date at my new place, despite that being a week past when they want me to start anyway (They wanted me monday).

strawberry float sake :|

I've agreed a start date and now he's saying I can't do it with a 'I've put a lot of money in to you' guilt trip thrown in.

It's ok! I didn't have to step in as she stayed at work!
And I got to help eat the lunch/cakes provided!
Everything worked out ok!

What's your contract say about notice periods etc? Statutory is 1 month I think, which is what most specify in their contracts. Some more 'professional' jobs or jobs where the person is too valuable to lose at only 1 month's notice, they might state 3 months or more.

As others have said though, sign yourself off for a week. Then go back for a week, and do it again!

I'm on a 4 month contract. It contradicts itself, in saying durimg the first 6 months of employment needs 3 months notice (impossible when I have just under 2 months of employment left) but later says the up to the first year requires one week (which I gave both verbally and in a letter today). He asked in our discussion if I could give him a month, to which I said if the other place will allow it, I would. They said no way, as they were expecting me This coming Monday and allowed 2 weeks as a compromise but not any more. I've now told the boss this is all I can give, but he's basically saying 'you owe me'.

Hopefully this doesn't get messy, because I'm starting the new job in 2 weeks no matter what.

I wanted some time between the jobs too, no chance now, straight from one to the other (first world problems).

Why didn't you point the contradiction out in the contract before signing? Most employment contracts are poorly written and there is usually something wrong with them. I suggest anyone moving job has a good read through and asks for any necessary changes before signing.

Yes?

My employer stipulates that staff must provide 3 months notice before leaving the company. Of course, nobody ever actually does this because what employer worth their salt is actually going to wait 3 months for their new recruit to start?

Don't worry about your existing employer, just do whatever you need to do to make the transition into your new employer a good one for both parties (i.e you and the new employer, not the old one).
