Does anybody have a Camera recommendation in the £50-70 range? My gf's after one for her birthday but as i'm getting a few other gifts that's about as far as I can stretch.

I need a new camera, mine's broken.

I know NOTHING about cameras, but I would like one that allows me to adjust shutter speeds as I may need to make HDR maps with it.

I can spend about £150, suggest away boys!

Not a great lens, on PC screens at anything approaching full size you see the horrible lens defects, but good for night out type snaps for posting on facebook etc, and at 4x6 would print out fine probably. Plus, it's PINK:

EDIT: I have no experience with that particular website, I bought my wife's camera on amazon for the same price, but they don't seem to have that model in stock there any more. I think they have been replaced by expensive new versions.

I know nothing about cameras either (well I suppose I know a little about 2 cameras), but I would imagine you would need a bridge camera to do that, a kind of mixture of point and click and professional. One of the intimidating looking stick out lensy types. They are basically glorified point and click cameras but give you the feeling that you are a bit of a whizz at photography when you use them. Mine is an old kodak easyshare model, but all the known brand camera makers make them.

I have absolutely no recommendations to make, unfortunately. I'm sure the topic starter will, though. Seems to know his stuff.

Have a look at the Canon IXUS range sir. These seem to be very well liked by camera nerds and get good reviews. I was having a look at reviews for the cheaper end of the range 70/75/80 recently and it went into detail about how one can adjust shutter speeds etc if you really want to do more than just select a no0b mode and click.

I have a Kodak Z740 which is similar looking to the one IGM posted a pic of but more silver and is 5MP. It has 10x Optical, 5x Digital zoom.
Have had it 5 yrs now and taken 4000 photos with it all around the world and never once has it let me down.

The only downside is it's bulky-ness due to the 10x optical so it doesn't fit in pocket or the missus' handbag but for holidays & family photos - I can't argue with it's awesome-ness.

The Kodak is big and bulky like KK says. However if it wasn't for the lens being quite good, the camera would take rubbish pictures. Anything with a big lens which is good and a decent sensor will take some nice pictures. However if you want the smaller camera to you know...have a compact camera then look to Fuji and Canon. Canon and Fuji have some amazingly good lenses for the cameras they use and I'm pretty sure it's not just the lens they use but the post processing on the picture as well as having very good sensors.

Thanks for your replies fellas, but you're all too late! Searched around using review sites and a Sony seemed to come on top so plumped for that for about £70. Think it was this one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0011U9U4K

Haven't seen it i action myself yet but as i'm currently using a cheapo Samsung Digimax most Camera's will seem an improvement.

That doesnt use the Zeiss lenses, just Sony's own brand and runs AA batteries. Save up a bit more and you could get a Fuji J10 for £90 which has lithium batteries and a better lens (at this end of the market). You will spend more than £20 on betteries within 3 months for the Sony.

The J10's only a tenner more at Amazon, really should've plumped for that one. I might give Amazon an email and see if I can swap it over.

I've seen some of the photos taken by the Sony and they're decent to be honest, the batteries could be an issue even though the camera will only be used once or twice a month.

There is a BIG difference between AA batteries and Lithium recharegable: 50 to about 300. Swap away, its only a tenner.

Do you have to buy a Lithium charger or do you just plug the camera in to point and charge it like that? The Tenner's not a problem, probably worth it just for the extra brownie points!

You get the charger with the camera.

Great topic, but could I suggest an addition to the Aperture section of your post ?

The point of using different apertures when taking a photograph is to change what is called "Depth of field". Basically this refers to how much of a photograph is in perfect focus and how much of it is blurred out.

Using a low aperture (for example F 1.4 - 4.5) gives a low depth of field - meaning that in effect things close to the camera will be in focus and the background will be "blown out" and blurred (this is very useful for portrait photography). Using a high aperture ( for example F22) will create a large depth of field meaning that a lot of the image is in focus (good for landscape photography).

Aperture is related to shutter speed in order to expose a photograph properly. A high F-Stop (low aperture) will mean that less light is being allowed into the camera and calling for a low shutter speed. The disadvantage with a low shutter speed is that anything under 100/1s can be hard to hold without some kind of blurring. Using a large aperture (low F-Stop) will mean that a lot of light is being let into the lens and thus a fast shutter speed can be used (250/s and up) however this means that very little of the image will be in focus.

Ill c&p it in when im not on my wii!

We got the IXUS 980 in at work yesterday and it is teh sex: svelte black exterior, faster focus motors, 28mm lens and FULL MANUAL. Truly a compact that approaches the G9.

I have a Canon EOS 400D with kit lens and also a Sigma 70-300mm lens with macro setting.

It's an excellent starters package.

I also have Flickr but must apologise for the lack of pictures as I don't have a laptop powerful enough to process my current raws from the last year. :(

Happy to throw any knowledge into the thread.

How is that sigma lens dav? I tend to keep to wider lenses since I prefer the feel they give, but for macro they're pretty gooseberry fool. So hard to find a cheap decent macro lens.

Oh, I use the Eos 350D, with it's 18-55mm that came with it, and I bought a separate 50mm which was good for portraits but since I dropped it the auto focus has broken so I've been selo-taping it to the front of my video camera so I can do some macro stuff for uni.

God, don't believe I'll have to wake up at about 5am soon just so I can do a time lapse of the sun rising though. Urgghhhhh. Bloody photography.

The Sigma is a very good lens for the price - was recommended to me by a pro photographer as an ideal starter lens!

Pictures are sharp, without abhoration, the zoom range is good and the macro settings have produced some excellent shots - flower innards, dragonflies and i've also managed to get some ace shots of a grasshopper handheld too! Only gripe is the macro button sticks at times and you have to knock it out of AF to fix it. Minor minor issue.

I think they've also produced a similar spec lens with IS too which would be worth a look!

The 50 mil lens - is that that excellent Canon one i've heard nothing but good things about? About £60ish?

My mate and I were up a hill at midnight taking pictures of startrails - was fricking freezing but all in the name of getting a good shot. Of course, i'd forgotten my cable release so I couldn't take any! His were damn good though!

You got a Flickr?
