I've had my eye on a D90 for ages but it's more expensive than the D3100 and apparently not as well kitted out. What's up with that?

The D90 has been succeeded with the D7000.

That's the trouble with digital, newer entry level models will ofter perform better on paper than older prosumer level ones.

You just want to know that the camera you're buying is the best it can be at that particular moment. I understand that within a year a new model will come out. Suppose it doesn't matter that much really.

The sun should only be a problem if you're using auto, so it's adjusting the exposure with each shot. If you use full manual (as you should be :D ) that wont be a problem.

Then on Photoshop go to File > Automate > Photomerge, or do it yourself. You'll also need a tripod.

Not with later versions of Photoshop. So long as you aren't cackhanded and the resolution is high enough it does a strawberry floating bang tidy job of stitching your images together.

I'm saving up for a Nikon D5100. Put a lot of research into it and that's the camera for me :)

Just need to find £600 D:

Do you have Adobe Photoshop?

I was thinking of getting a tilt shift lens when I get my DSLR but gooseberry fool is mad money.

Nikon D3000.

Whatcha reckon? I'm thinking of getting one.

I've got a D60 in my hand right now and it's pretty lush. Macro lens would be nice though.

Why not get the 3100 instead?

~£100 price difference.

Canon EOS 1000D also seems to be a contender.

If you've got a D60 then stick with Nikon to use your lenses.

I thought the spec was quite different between the 3000 and the 3100?

The D60 is a friend's.

And yeah, the D3100 seems to have some nice features, although I'm not sure how useful they are, like the video, etc.

I would go for the 3100 just because that's the most up to date version. But the tech doesn't matter really.

Looking at reviews, the EOS1000D, old as hell though it is, might actually be the one to go for.

It seems to take better photos, and it's got a better UI than the Nikon.

Shame about the tiny screen on the back, and the Nikon's got 11 point AF.

edit:

I've since read Knoyleo's post on the previous page and am thinking about the K-x or K-r.

Could you elaborate on what's so restrictive about these entry level DSLRs, Knoyleo?

I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to photography. I haven't taken it seriously for about 5 years now, and I've even lost most of my portfolio, I think. Having said that, I don't have much time to be avidly shooting, so I'm thinking a DSLR will suit me fine. I know my way around an SLR already and my requirements are quite basic.

Yes, assuming my budget can stretch that far, it's what I'm after.

I can be had for about £364 after cashback, but that requires a £415 outlay in the first place as you don't get the cashback for a while.

Also, I'm off on holiday on Friday so it's sort of for then so putting it off for a while isn't really ideal.

The body on the 1000D and D3000 are both adequate. The sensor in the D3100 is slightly better, it's got the Live view and some nice (although basic) video capabilities, although again, I'm not sure how much I'd use the latter two.

I'm thinking it'd be better to just stuff it and buy the cheaper cam and invest in a 50mm Prime lens instead when I've got a bit of free cash. A lot of "pros" say that yeah, it really doesn't matter that much which you're going for and you're infinitely better off with a good lens on an alright body than vice versa.

I originally had my eyes set on a D5100 but I'm considering cutting back to a 3100 to get me started (even though I'm not a complete dslr n00b) as my financial situation has somewhat changed. Just need something to get me started and get a collection of lenses together then I can always trade in the 3100 body against something bigger in a few years time.

Just about any advice I can find from pros is that you're more than fine with either. The best bit of advice I've had is that more than anything else, you are going to be the bottleneck, and upgrading the lens is going to bring you far, far more benefit than just having a swish camera.

I've been playing with the D60 today and it suits my needs perfectly. The only problem is finding a good, affordable editing suite for messing with my Raws. I've been trying to check out the new PaintShopPro Photo X3 Ultimate (what a mouthfull) as it's cheap as chips and meant to be very good, but can't get the damn trial to download.
