Trump acquitted on second charge of impeachment

President Trump has been acquitted on the second impeachment charge, obstruction of congress, by a vote of 53 to 47.

Trump has now been acquitted in his impeachment trial, as expected. He is the third US president in history to face and survive a Senate trial.

Even if he loses in November he's going to be unbearable.

Yes and it will always be that way. It requires 2/3rds of the Senate to remove a President and it is highly unlikely that a President would ever be removed. The Republicans and Democrats are both always likely to have more than 1/3 of the Senate and so can always block it. The only way I ever see it happening is if there was an independent President and the Republicans and Democrats worked together. So yeah, never going to happen.

It's worked before. Nixon was looking like he'd be impeached on Bipartisan grounds (and then removed from office was again looking likely) but he resigned.

But the voter base and the republican party have changed in years.

But it gets it on record. The Dems did the right thing as per the constitution. They can try to use this in elections (Senetor etc) in upcoming months/years. Whether it works is another issue

Trump was still impeached and he will forever be known as an impeached President. He was guilty of wrongdoing and the Democrats pursued him for it. It failed because of a stupid system and a partisan Senate, but it was worth doing.

The alternative is to just ignore wrongdoing.

The Republicans can't even agree on why they didn't vote to remove.

Some say he didn't do it.
Some say he did it, but it wasn't illegal.
Some say he did it, but it wasn't illegal to the degree to remove from office
Some say he did it, but a president should only be removed by electorate despite what constitution says

Then there's this stupid

Susin Collins: He did it, but i think Trump learned his lesson from that call

Trump's next second: Nothing was wrong with my perfect call

This can forever be held up as an example of what happens when you fail to have an impartial jury, so that's something

America is already riddled with examples of that.

I'm guessing because a large amount of Democrats believed it was the right thing to do. Regardless of the outcome.

Yep.

Trump has got away with plenty of stuff over his life. And most politicians in America get away with a lot.

That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have been impeached though. He absolutely deserved it.

I think impeaching him was the morally right thing to do, but politically it will be very damaging for the Democrats at the ballot box, sadly.

It will now be very easy for Trump to paint the Democrats as being out to get him and failing each time - the Mueller Report was a dud, impeachment was a dud, the pee tapes are yet to surface, Stormy Daniels went away, Melania hasn't escaped yet - he's definitely getting re-elected.

Except it wasn't. It was just, effectively, suppressed by Barr and DoJ. It showed plenty.

The supporters just don't care or they'll believe the lies the liars tell them.

They just don't care as long as "the libs are owned" or the other side "loses". I've no idea how you combat such hate filled idiocy,.

I have heard the argument that it will be damaging to the Democrats, but I don’t understand it.

Trump supporters/Republicans will vote for him whatever he does. Democrats will vote against him whatever he does.

The people in the middle? I just don’t see the average non-partisan American thinking “He was impeached but not convicted? That’s the guy for me!”. They will either ignore it or be put off of Trump due to the scandal.

That doesn’t mean he will not win of course, but it is much more to do with who the Democrats put up than anything to do with the impeachment. Hilary Clinton was one of the least popular Democrat nominees in history, but even she pulled in 3 million more votes than Donald. Give the nomination to the right man/woman and they have a very good chance of kicking Trump out.

Expect the election results to be contested, no matter what, this autumn. There'll be no peaceful transition.
