Aren't quite a few senators up for re-election soon, some of which in quite contested states, and therefore they won't want to annoy their Republican voter base. So they are probably going to tow the party line regardless of their own personal opinion.

Likewise, if Trump was extremely toxic, than rather than do what they think is right, they'd probably want to wash their hands of him in order to stand a chance of re-election.

Both are hardly great if you're trying to get a fair trial going. It should absolutely be secret.
