Is it generally the case that newer Blu-rays have a better picture quality, and that films predating the format (e.g. something from 1998) don't look any better than DVDs? And is this even more the case the older a particular film is?

No. 35mm film has a huge resolution.

Not at all, most films in history were recorded onto 35mm film, which is roughly the same as 4K video.

Hence why classic films like King Kong and Casablanca look much better on Blu-ray than DVD, but still not as sharp as the original film.

LOL how can people not know about 35mm film? Some people I have spoken to say things like "there is no point buying the blu ray of an old film because it is only upscaled to HD"

Received Les Miserables on blu ray today. Digibook edition and it comes with the itunes HD copy about 7GB

To be fair, it's easier to make things "HD" now, since they're already digital so would be lowering the quality from 4K or imax, in most cases. With older films each frame needs to be scanned which can be long and quite expensive considering they've already done so for the DVD/VHS market. Transfers like Heat just go to show that just because there is a great quality version some where doesn't necessarily mean that the home version will be so. Since this is more prolific with films released before blu ray was around I can see why people assume that image quality these days is better than it used to be.

Which means they're cutting off something like 20% of the film that was shown at the cinema. Aspect ratio should always be optional.

EDIT: 1.85:1, so it has very slight borders at the top and bottom.

The Avengers was filmed at 1:85:1 which is basically 16:9 (as I wish all films were, since you watch it once or twice at cinema but countless times on a 16:9 TV).

Inception on Blu Ray uses pan and scan to make it a 16:9 ratio? My copy has the proper aspect ratio, the way it should be, if people want to zoom in and lose the left and right side of the image, let them do it by using the button on the remote rather than making it the default option.

It filled the screen like all the adverts do at the cinema, they just don't roll the sides out like they have to for movie-widescreen films.

When i change the setting on my TV to full pixel then I do get slight borders at the top and bottom. But they are tiny. Yeah I wish more films were shot in 1.85:1
But I suppose some films look better in 2.4:1...nevermind lol

Gah. Bought the Fast and Furious complete collection on blu-ray the other day, and the case is broken Asked the supplier if they could just send me a new case and they were like "nah m8 send it back to us and we'll send you another copy or give you a refund" and I'm 99% sure they don't have any more copies.

Is there anywhere in the UK that sells replacement blu-ray cases? All the places I've found on amazon/ebay seem to be in America. Disaster.
