Oh boy. The new housing expansion, Homestead, is right up my street. It's like a more involved (and expensive :dread: ) version of Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer  .

Just spent two hours arranging things... and then undoing all that work because I'm a terrible perfectionist when it comes to laying stuff out :fp: . I suspect that I will now be happily engrossd in arranging stuff for months without ever actually playing the main game!

I've got a yearning to play more Elder Scrolls and Morrowind looks enticing but am suspicious of ESO. Over the years I've briefly played a few MMOs (like half an hours worth) and what I remember from it is people running all over the place in a rush to get somewhere, just like PlayStation Home.

I have some questions. Can ESO be played like a single player game? What is the best way to play? Can player characters just come up to you and kill you? What is good and bad about it?

Hey, Venom, I can share my ESO experience with you:

> ESO can be played solo or multiplayer. I'm only at level 21 and most of my progress has been through
solo questing. However, I'd recommend being open to multiplayer activities; it's a lot of fun when you're battling together as a team!
> ESO has areas were you can battle other players (PvP; Player versus Player) but most areas are based upon tackling the in-game challenges (PvE; Player versus Environment).
> ESO doesn't require a subscription to play... but there is an option for that and it is useful. If you sub you get a few experience boosts, some Crowns (for buying stuff) and access to all DLC areas (but not Morrowind) but the real benefit is access to the Crafting Bag; this is a storage facility which is very useful for avoiding some pretty tight inventory management. Of course, you can try the game without the subscription and see if you enjoy it before deciding whether or not you want to sub.
> The game is huge! Since launch a number of expansions have been released and, following the One Tamriel update last year, you are free to travel across the entire game world regardless of your ranking.
> There are some pretty complex activities in the game and they are not always well explained. The game starts off pretty basic but, over time, many fresh challenges and opportunities become possible. You need to learn lots of things but it is satisfying when you do so! Even though I'm at level 21, I feel like a beginner and there are many aspects I still know nothing about. Many players in the game have amazing outfits and skills; the mechanisms that enable this take a lot of time to learn!
> If you wanted to give ESO a try, I'd suggest getting the basic version (it was on sale in the PS Store earlier this month; but you could get the disc version cheaply) and see how you get on with it before splashing out on DLC areas and expansions.

I hope that helps, dude. Just shout if you have any other queries.

Thanks jawafour for taking the time to answer, it's much appreciated. I do have some more questions! Does playing solo feel like a normal Elder Scrolls game? Are enemies strength scalable to match your level, or do they have a set level and you have to get good to fight them?

Uhm.. oddly enough, Venom, I have played far more of ESO than any other Elder Scrolls game, so it's difficult for me to judge! There are certain standard MMO RPG approaches i.e. quests can be simpler than in some offline RPGs and the graphics aren't *quite* as good... but it is still involving, with tons of stuff to learn, and - in my view - it still looks lush!

Yes, enemies and challenges do scale to your progress albeit there are many challenges that you'll do better in once your character has developed. The Open Tamriel update issued last year means that you can now travel anywhere in the game world and tackle whatever you want; there are no constraints. The environments are large and varied.

I played a couple of hours this evening, purely arranging the grounds for my new house. This aspect may not be everyone's cup of tea - and it is entirely optional - but I love it!

A lot of people who don't enjoy this tend to go in with a mindset of it being "Skyrim with multiplayer". It isn't, but the game wasn't meant to be that either, so it's certainly not a negative against it.
Just don't go in expecting a 'traditional' Elder Scrolls experience, go in being open to it being an MMO first and something different to the usual Elder Scrolls formula.

Shall we expect a Fallout Online as a sort of spiritual successor while TES gets its next singleplayer adventure, then?

Oh my... now we're talking! I had never, until now, thought of a Fallout Online. I would be there for Day One!

Regrettably, I think it'd be pretty unlikely, though. MMOs demand huge resources and ongoing development and support; I'm not sure if Zenimax would have the time or resources to maintain two different online worlds. But, yes, it could be wonderful!

It wouldn't run concurrently with ESO, we're talking about years down the line when ESO has run its course and people are becoming impatient for the next 'real' Elder Scrolls game. They get their singleplayer ES, while Fallout fans can romp about online, in pretty much a full reversal of the present status quo.

Since Fallout and Elder Scrolls seem to do better and better with each new game, online and off, I'd think it'd be a strategy Zenimax would want to look into, moving forward.
