The Elder Scrolls VI

Platforms: Xbox & PC

After today's news it's about time one of the biggest games of the next decade gets its own thread. Revealed at Bethesda's E3 2018 conference and shared with GRcade by Monkey Man, who has exceptionally kindly given me his blessing to start this, a gentleman.

In May 2019 Bethesda released a video celebrating 25 years of the Elder Scrolls. In it it reveals they making the 'Skyrim grandma' a character in the TES: VI. They used photogrammetry technology to scan her into the game.

Today in Todd Howard's post about Bethesda acquisition by Microsoft he said the Creation Engine is getting its biggest overhaul.

With each new console cycle, we evolved together. From bringing mods to consoles with Fallout 4, now over a billion downloads, to the latest technologies fueling Xbox Series X/S. These new systems are optimized for the vast worlds we love to create, with generational leaps not just in graphics, but CPU and data streaming as well. It’s led to our largest engine overhaul since Oblivion, with all new technologies powering our first new IP in 25 years, Starfield, as well as The Elder Scrolls VI.

The game is rumoured to be set in the Hammerfell region of the Redguards. There is still hope that the game might come to other platforms including PlayStation, Nintendo and Stadia.

I spend so much time in Skyrim that it's to the detriment of all other games so I'm looking forward to do this to see what Bethesda have been doing to develop the gameplay and increase the immersion. Any more news I will update here.

For strawberry float's sake, ditch Creation Engine! And ditch Todd while you're at it.

Xbox haven't stated that it will be Xbox only. Seems they will still sell on PS5 and take a cut.

They need a complete overhaul of both their systems and storytelling.

Fallout 4 was a soulless mess, the definition of dumbing down a concept until it becomes so unrecognizable from where it began it may as well be something else. 76 was even worse by all standards. Games like the Witcher, Disco Elysium and even The Outer Wilds (not Worlds) have shown what you can do with a modern RPG, but old leaders like Bethesda and BioWare are starting to lag behind.

They need to hire a bunch of new talent and set them to changing what the core of their games are. I have relatively little hope of them doing this as they become more and more an auteur studio whose identity is tied to a singular person, namely Todd Howard. The fact they're continuing on the Creation Engine is a bad first sign, but I hope I'm wrong.

I completely accept any and all criticisms that can be levelled at Skyrim and God know it's been milked beyond all reasonable means (I think I bought it 6 times by the end), but this will still be day 1 for me.

No one knows if it will be on PS5. I'm starting to think it won't be, I get MS will want some money back but with Sony timing Death Loop and that Tokyo game, MS might keep Elders Scrolls 6 back for a year or entirely.

How much Skyrim sold they would be silly not to get this game out as much as possible. I really think this will still come to PS5, maybe not the same time but it will.

Microsoft don’t need exclusive stuff when they give “their people” that game via game pass. Game pass is the new “exclusive” for Microsoft. The sell is “come to us and you just get all this with a small sub, or go there and pay for everything”

True, but just saying no one knows if it's coming to PS5 or not...

I accept all the individual criticisms of Skyrim - inferior looking engine compared to others, below-par writing, etc - yet I had a much better experience with that game than any open-world game since, even Witcher3. (When it comes to getting fully embedded in an immersive fantasy world of adventure).

There's just something about the TES games; they throw together all the ingredients and magic happens. Somehow.

Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim have all been some of my fondest ever gaming memories.

Very much this.

The tech is ancient and even small companies seem to have better now.
Hopefully now they have access to the other Microsoft studios engines they can see how much better they are and use one of those. Any of them would be better I suspect.

This is the first time I've seen anyone describe Outer Wilds as an RPG.

Well, I didn't actually refer to it as an RPG. It's a story driven game that dealt with narrative in a unique way and it's more about this, and how that will/should inform the way games grapple with the concept going forward, that I was referring to.

Having a story be led by po-face NPCs doling out quests with the emotion of a boiled mussel isn't the way to go anymore.

Upgrade paths? The only upgrades in Outer Wilds are to do with your own knowledge of the game world and its secrets.

Edited my post but I meant "Minus the fact it didn't have upgrade paths"

This isn't aimed at just you two specifically but I strawberry floating hate this place when people willingly miss the point of a post to get a few quick jabs in. It was more than strawberry floating obvious what I was talking about here, even if I didn't explain it quite as clearly as I'd hoped.

Think I might hold out for the GOTY edition in 2036, then the VR version that's been optimised in no way at all in 2038.

That's actually a really good example. Vague and mysterious they may be, but the NPCs in Fromsoft games serve a purpose more than mere questgivers. They're part of, if you'll excuse the extreme strawberry floating pretentiousness, the narrative tapestry of those games. Each game is a mystery slowly unraveled through various means, one of which is the NPCs. They tell a story beyond the short monologues they spout, and they're woven in so tightly with the rest of the story that they become characters through means other than clicking through endless dialogue options

Fromsoft are another studio that have furthered what it means to be an RPG and there are definitely things Bethesda should/could learn from them.

Wasn't meant as a jab! Was just curious about the concept of OW being an RPG in some form which I hadn't seen suggested before.
